VB 4.1.2: Troubles with Win7 x64 guest on Lion host

Post by mpetroo »

Good day everyone,

After installing VirtualBox 4.1.2 on Lion (OS X 10.7.1) host and running Windows 7 x64 guest from Boot Camp partition I have some troubles.
1) The first one is that guest VM sometimes freezes for several seconds. During this period, the VM does not respond to user actions and after freeze period all these actions are done. At the same time, the process named VirtualBox VM do not freezed in host OS, so this problem might be inside virtual machine not in the host.
2) WDDM driver does not work properly. Generally, it works but only a few seconds. After that dwm process is stopped and aero is not working. The troubleshooter detects that "Desktop Windows Manager is disabled".
So, the question is only whether someone have similar problems as me? :)
I would like to suggest developers to solve problems to make VirtualBox even better, especially first issue. I would also like to suggest providing Lion's full-screen app support to essentially improve user interface in OS X.

I have been having the same kind of freezing problems on Snow Leopard with previous versions of VirtualBox.
My feeling is that the guest doesn't freeze, only its clock does. Any action that is time related (clock or CPU widget, menu animations, i.e. pretty much any UI action unless you disable animations) will freeze. This usually happens for 5-10 seconds every 30 ish seconds, make the VM pretty much unusable. As a result the clock gets out of sync and then the guest additions kicks in and acceleratse the clock to catch up.
I tried a lot of different settings change (even command line only ones) but I haven't been able to fix the problem yet.

I used to have similar problems where the Guest OS (Windows 7) would stall for a while and then just start working again... changed my chipset to PIIX3 last night and haven't had as much trouble so far.

I'm on OS X Lion (Host) on a Macbook Pro.

Hi guys, after switching to PIIX3 chipset the troubles become less obvious. I mean, if I do not see them in a typical regime it does not mean these troubles disappear at all. Thanks hms for suggestion.
I'll wait for at least the next release (4.1.4) with this chipset and after that I'll try to switch back to newer ICH9 one. Probably, the problems will disappear.
Generally, I do not see (from user point of view) any sufficient difference between two chipsets. Whether can anyone explain what are the major advantages of ICH9 introduced in VirtualBox 4.0? :)

I have just updated to 4.1.4 only to see that the issue still exists.
Could this issue be related to aftermarket SSDs? I cannot seem to find an official bug report on the issue.
