how do i increase the storage for the guest machine on my virtualbox on mac os x? i already have the guest operating system already installed

You do this in a terminal window on the host.
VBoxManage modifyhd <filename> --resize <megabytes>
You must use the absolute path and file name including the extension for the <filename>
Since the --resize value will be in megabytes you need to specify the new size accordingly.
Example: You want to increase a 20GB drive to 40GB. you would use --resize 40960
After you have increased the size of the HDD you still need to tell the guest OS to use the rest of the new drive. You can use the guests drive manager if it is Windows Vista or newer or you boot the guest with Gparted and adjust the size with that.
I would strongly suggest that you copy the original file to a safe location before you start this (called making a backup).
