How do I get DVD burner to work Windows 7 Guest

Post by suzan24k »

New at all of this. Could not find answer after searching posts.

I want to burn a DVD from my Windows 7 guest running on the Macbook Snow Leopard Host. Have VirtualBox 3.1.8 installed.

Can someone tell me what steps I need to take to be able to burn DVDs?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Suzan,

How about burning the files to CD with your Mac Host? You can create a shared folder in your Windows 7 Guest to your Mac Host and burn your files to CD/DVD from the Mac Host.

Do you have Guest Additions installed on your Windows 7 VM? Check out Chapter 4 of the User Manual for info on Guest Additions and setting up shared folders (section 4.7). Chapter 5.8 of the User Manual ( VBox 3.1.8 ) describes writing CDs & DVDs -- note that this is for burning data files to CD/DVD.

Can you tell us a bit more about what you are trying to accomplish?

I have software on Windows that let's me make copies of my Home made movies. It reads a personal movie disk then writes to temp space on disk. Asks for a blank DVD disk and then writes to it. I had it working on my previous windows machine. Now I have software installed but it can't find a DVD burner to write to. I also think it thinks the burner is just a CD ROM since that's what displays.

Thank you for any help.

Suzan,

I'd suggest doing this on your Mac Host side of the equation. For help with writing CD/DVDs -- Mac Guru Lounge posted a nice article that you might find helpful. Check out => http://www.macgurulounge.com/dont-buy-t ... -for-free/

If you want to pursue video DVD burning from your Windows 7 Guest you might be interested in this old forum post => http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?p=21834

Good luck with your project.

Did you enable passthrough on the virtual machine's settings?

I have to do this too. I'm trying to burn a Windows live DVD from my Win7 guest using Nero burner but its not detecting my DVD burner. I could figure out how to do it from my Ubuntu host but I'll only do that if its impossible for me to do it with the guest cuz I already have everything setup to do it with Nero.

How do you do that? On my settings, I could only find out how to enable USB devices:

I have no idea how I'd go about enabling the DVD burner though.

Since the last post woke me up, I'm going to re-engage in this topic. I too don't know how to enable DVD-Burner Passthrough -- just Device activation from the VirtualBox toolbar menu. Going to the MAC Host side won't work because the software I use and want to use is only for Windows. I don't want to spend more money because VirtualBox can't let me use the DVD burner on the Windows host. To be fair, I haven't tried this after the last updates I've applied from VirtualBox. So if the DVD burner starts working I will post back here that it is.

So if anyone figures out how to get the DVD burner on the Mac to be usuable in the VirtualBox Windows guest, please let me know how.

Thank you.

You find it under the storage section in your guest settings. See screen shot below:
