VBox 3.0.6 on Snow Leopard 10.6.1 hangs

Post by heyes »

When I start VBox on SL, I get the initial VBox welcome screen but it hangs there with spinning beach ball. I had VBox 2.2 installed and working fine on Leopard, did an upgrade to SL. Deleted VBox 2.2, all old virtual machines, all VBox plist files, installed VBox 3.0.6-52. Same results. What am I missing?

Thanks.

Did you use the VirtualBox_Uninstall.tool (part of the package you downloaded to install VB) to uninstall the old VB before installing the new one?

You could also try throwing away the <your hard drive>/Users/<your account>/Library/VirtualBox folder and then try re-installing.

I didn't use the uninstall tool when I got deleted version 2.2, I just deleted the app and installed 3.0.6. When it didn't work, I used the uninstall tool to remove 3.0.6 and then tried reinstalling without any luck.

That's why I was thinking you may not have gotten everything. SO...

You could try throwing away the VirtualBox folder that would contain any remnants or your old VirtualBox install, which is located on the path <your hard drive>/Users/<your account>/Library/VirtualBox, and then try running the VirtualBox app again.

AND if that doesn't work, you could give some more details about your hardware, like what kind of Mac you're running this on, and how much memory you have installed. And maybe some details like if you're trying to run VM Fusion or Parallels at the same time as VirtualBox.

The more data we have the more accurate our stabs in the dark will be.

I uninstalled 3.0.6 again, and deleted the ~/Library/VirtualBox directory, reinstalled VB and same problem.

So, I've got Snow Leopard 10.6.1, running on an iMac 2.16G Intel Core 2 Dual, 3G 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Onboard NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT video with 128MB VRAM. 32-bit color. 1900X1200 resolution. Not running VM Fusion or Parallels (and never have installed these).

I also found this in the system log. There is quite a bit more listed, but I didn't want to post it unless as it is quite long.

Are you booting Snow Leopard in 32-bit or 64-bit?

32-bit. Just did a clean install of the OS, same results ( did the clean install in case there were problems with the upgrade from Leopard ).

I have the exact same issue. This is on a format and install of SL, so obviously it is a new install of VB. I'm running 10.6.1 and 3.0.6. After leaving my Windows XP VM alone for a few minutes (e.g. working in other Mac OS apps or just leaving the XP VM on fullscreen and dormant), VB will hang (meaning infinite spinning beach ball of death) and must be force quit. This is reproducible every time I launch the VM. I am assuming that VB isn't quite ready for SL yet as I never had even a similar issue under Leopard. This VM drive boots and works just fine on a Leopard machine. I am using a Summer 2009 15" MBP (MacBookPro5,3) Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz, 4 GB RAM (512 allocated to the XP VM).

I am fairly certain that I tested VB on Snow Leopard version 10.6.0 and it worked without problems. This leads me to believe that there is a problem with VB 3.0.6 on Snow Leopard version 10.6.1. I'll post a bug report, but I'd like to know if anyone is successfully using VB 3.0.6 on the latest version of Snow Leopard.

I created another user account and started VB from there. Starts fine. So the problem appears to be somewhere in my other account, but I'm not sure where to check. I've already looked at ~/Library/Preferences for plist files, and ~/Library/VirtualBox. Any suggestions? I'm getting close...

It could be that you have some process running on your original account that is interfering with VirtualBox. You might want to start up each account, open Activity Monitor and select all the processes, copy and paste them into a spreadsheet, and then compare them side by side to see what's running on the original account that's not running on the new account. Then try disabling or uninstalling any of the non-matching login items, programs, dashboard widgets, background tasks, etc. in a process of elimination until you either find the culprit, or are back at square one.

Started VB on each account, VB started on new user and hung on old account. Checked processes, there was only one on the broke user that was running that seemed odd was Folder Action Dispatcher.

On the old account, the VB welcome screen appears, and then it hangs, almost like it's trying to find the registration page but can't.

I really want to find the cause of this, not just transfer everything to the new account. Is there some documentation of files and locations that VB installs Mac systems somewhere I can check? Any ideas welcome...
