Last step is not necessary. You don't need to go to the monitors setting and set the resolution. You use the mouse drag to set the screen to what ever you want or use the host-f toggle to go to full screen and back out. You can also use the host+L to go in and out of seamless.
One other thing that needs to be noted is if this does not work you should look in the Machine tab and make sure that auto-resize is activated, or use the host+g toggle to make sure.
