3.0.6 multi-display issue
3.0.6 multi-display issue
I just upgraded to 3.0.6 running an XP guest on Snow Leopard host. My host machine is a MacBook Pro hooked up to an Apple Cinema Display with the laptop screen serving as an extended desktop.
When I have my guest machine on the laptop display there are some funky display refresh issues happening. One example is when I have Outlook open. While mousing around in the guest Outlook appears as expected. But when I bring the mouse out of the guest Outlook disappears from display. My guest desktop wallpaper and menu bar all still appear but it looks as if Outlook is no longer running. The window completely disappears in the guest. And the application marker disappears from the running applications bar.
If I mouse back to the guest, Outlook reappears partially. Edges of the app are missing. Some reappear if I mouse over them. Minimizing and maximizing the app brings it back. But it disappears as soon as I mouse out of the guest again.
If I drag the guest machine onto my Cinema Display I don't have any problems. The guest display works normally.
I have updated the Guest Addition drivers... Anyone else experiencing similar issues?

Re: 3.0.6 multi-display issue
I have the same problem. Everything functions normally when the guest window is on the main display. As soon as I move it to the 2nd display it turns black. Resizing the window will sometimes bring it back but it's very inconsistent.

I have the same issues, I have the same config as the original post, except a non-apple secondary display.

I have the same problem.
I have an iMac (Snow Leopard) with an external HP w2207 22" monitor that gets the same video refresh issues reported here. The guests I have are Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.04.
If I use the Primary iMac's display I have no problems at all, like the others report.

Aaah, these are the best bugs to have: not show stoppers, and yet so easy to describe.
+1
Main display (which is the external monitor) OK
Secondary display (which is the MacBook Pro monitor) black screen as described.
(main display is the one with the menu bar).
MacBook Pro Rev A 2GB RAM
Host: Snow Leopard 10.6.1
Guest OS: Windows 7
Version 3.0.6 + reinstalled guest additions

Same here, also getting the problem on secondary display and Snow Leopard 10.6.1 with a Windows XP VM.

It's been reported as a bug:

Re: 3.0.6 multi-display issue
Workaround is embarrassingly simple
Move the window to the first/primary display
Hope it gets fixed soon

Re: 3.0.6 multi-display issue
That's not much of a work around when one of your primary uses of virtual box is keeping a vm open on a secondary display
Re: 3.0.6 multi-display issue
It's not a window. It's fullscreen. If I make it fullscreen on my primary monitor, my dock goes away, all of my OS X app windows are obscured, and the menu bar disappears until I mouse up to the top of the screen. In other words, it makes my system a PITA to use.bugabuga wrote:Workaround is embarrassingly simpleMove the window to the first/primary display
I keep Windows open fullscreen on my secondary monitor (on one virtual desktop) so that I don't have the annoyances of dealing with Windows crap interfering with my desktop.

Re: 3.0.6 multi-display issue
I guess it's a problem with the combination of Snow Leopard, 3.0.6. I have the very same problem and dragging the VM to the external screen (Samsung) solves the problem. Both XP and Windows 7 have similar issues.
Dragging to an external screen is of course not always an option.
Hopefully a VB update will solve the problem, everything else is fantastic.

Re: 3.0.6 multi-display issue
It could be OpenGL related: http://www.macnn.com/articles/09/08/29/ ... enchmarks/
I was able to get dual stability by:
- Disabling 3D settings in the VM setup.
- Reinstall Guest Addition 3.0.6 with 3D disabled.
- Reducing screen resolution and colour quality (16 bit) inside Windows (i.e. reset Windows settings).
- Re-enable maximum resolution and colour quality inside Windows.

Re: 3.0.6 multi-display issue
Hi.
I am having the same issue: Snow Leopard, vbox 3.0.6, Win XP, running on secondary display with the refresh problem. However I tried changing the Display Profile of the 2nd monitor and I noticed that if I select a different color profile the display refreshes to a previous state and if the color profile is the same as the main display it seems to work (not a workaround but something worth studying).
Could anyone else confirm this?
Nas

Host: Mac OS X Snow leopard.
VB: 3.0.6
Guest: ArchLinux, Xorg running KDE.
and as nasacct if I use the same color profile on both monitors it works fine.
