Kubuntu 9.04 won't install???

Post by phreakshew »

Hello, and please Help!

I was/am really excited to install Kubuntu as a VM on my Intel Mac running OSX, (10.5.6) but after I tell it to install the OS, NOTHING HAPPENS. I'm left with a blank black screen.

I am trying to install from an .iso image. I set it to use 1gb ram (host has 4gb) and 8gb Hd. It starts to load Kubuntu, then goes blank after that.

These are the steps I took, as per instructions:
VirtualBox in applications menu
Hit NEW button when starting up
Gave VM a name: "Kubuntu 9.04"
Selected Linux as OS.
Distro: neither "Ubuntu" no "other" worked. (No "Kubuntu" listed as option)
Gave 1,006MB RAM to VM. (Host left with 3GB)
Chose "NEW" when setting up Virtual Hard Disk
Chose Fixed-sized file, and gave it 8GB. (Host left with 20GB)
Under SETTINGS - added "kubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386.iso file which is on my desktop
ISO file added in manager window
Hit START.
Watched Kubuntu status bar loading.... hearing fan kick on
Sat staring at black screen, still hearing fan whirring
black screen never goes away, fan noise getting annoying.

Try setting Base Memory to 1024 MB.

Disable VT.

Enable PAE.

Base memory set to 1024MB
Disabled VT, Enabled PAE

No change in results. (Same black screen, same fan noise)

OK. Then check md5sum. Probably the installation medium is not ok.

Well, guess what!

I went ahead and enabled everything (ACPI, IO APIC, VT-x/AMD-V, Nested Paging, PAE/NX), tried it again, and it worked! I just installed Kubuntu! After I do the guest additions I will try enabling 3D.

Question: What do all these things do that I just enabled?

Thanks -

- answering my own question- manual states:

ACPI is Advanced Configuration and Power Interface; eases cloning of PC images
IO APIC - Input-Output Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller; eases cloning of PC images

--is it wise/necessary to have these BOTH enabled -?

VT-x/AMD-V = hardware virtualization vs. software virtualization. From what I read, Virtualbox's hardware virtualization has improved to become faster than software virtualization - so, then, it is better to have this enabled?

Nested Paging - increases performance with hardware virtualization (if supported)
PAE/NX = Physical Address Extension - says Ubuntu Server requires this.

OK- so I kinda get what these do (but not completely). I guess what I'm wondering is, is it better in some way to DISable some of these things I have enabled (like could there be some conflicts that arise with having everything enabled that would degrade performace, etc)?

Thanks -

There is an old phrase that comes to mind.

  • If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Actually there are a few that could cause the OS to not boot if you change then now, especially the VT-x/AMD-v and probably the IO-APIC. But nothing that you have on should adversely affect the performance of your VM. IMHO
