Problem connecting USB Bluray writer

Hi, new to this so forgive my ignorance - have tried the manual and searched here but not found anything to help. I'm trying to connect a Bluray writer via USB to a Windows XP VM running on an OSX host. I have a USB printer connected and that works fine, but for some reason I just can't connect to the writer. I've added it to the USB port settings and it appears in the list but whenever I try to connect to it I get the following error message:

USB device 'HLDS Inc SuperMulti RW' with UUID {80e1f748-8c7f-4305-8698-7f41bf179bf0} is busy with a previous request. Please try again later.

Result Code:
NS_ERROR_INVALID_ARG (0x80070057)
Component:
HostUSBDevice
Interface:
IHostUSBDevice {173b4b44-d268-4334-a00d-b6521c9a740a}
Callee:
IConsole {e3c6d4a1-a935-47ca-b16d-f9e9c496e53e}

Similarly, if I try to add hardware via Windows XP, it can't see the drive anywhere.

Any help/advice greatly appreciated!!

Cheers
