VB 2.1.4 not starting a Linux virtual machine

Hi to all,

I have installed the most recent version of VirtualBox and set up a new "slot" intended to be used with Xubuntu, so I chose "Ubuntu" as the OS type, and made a variable size virtual HDD. Then, I configured this "slot" to mount Xubuntu's ISO image, and tried to fire it up to install it. However, I end up with this message, which I haven't seen before on Mac OS X:

VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (rc=-1908)

Make sure the kernel module has been loaded successfully.
Once I click "Abort", the only button on the dialog, I can read this one:

Virtual machine 'Xubuntu 8.10' has terminated unexpectedly during startup.

Code de résultat :
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Composant :
Machine
Interface :
IMachine {ea6fb7ea-1993-4642-b113-f29eb39e0df0}
Just before adding the image file, it seems to report a problem with the USB subsystem with the exact same NS_ERROR_FAILURE message.

Problem is, as I remember, the USB system is only properly taken care of after installing Guest Additions, which are in turn downloadable only inside a running virtual machine

Is there anything I have missed here?
Thx for help
