thanks for your long explanations. I tried once more with bootcamp - getting rid of the parition in osx and starting again. And it worked this time. I have windows XP working. I'm not sure what I did different if I'm honest. But if I work it out I'll let you know as it's good to know what was wrong.

Don't forget to install the windrivers for the mac-hardware with your OS-X systemdvd.
