Cannot change Windows XP resolution to anything but 800x600

I have installed the virtualbox guest additions successfully. I am using a macbook with OS 10.5.6 with a 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. For whatever reason, I can't seem to get any adjustment at all on screen size. Is there any reason this shouldn't work? Should I scrap the machine and start rebuilding another one? I would appreciate anyone's insight.
