XP wont boot: Disk Error

Post by mpi »

Hi,

VB 2.1.0, Tiger 10.4.1, MacBook 2,1
I finally managed to create proper raw vmdk and try to boot my XP SP3 Bootcamp Partition.

However it fails quite early with a disk error/press any key to restart message.

In enclose log below, but I think the key issue is:

Code: Select all

00:00:08.925 Guest Log: BIOS: Booting from Hard Disk...
00:00:08.926 Guest Log: BIOS: int13_harddisk: function 42. LBA out of range
What is this LBA?
How to get it "in range"? :)

Thanks for any idea.
Best

I can confirm this behavior (LBA out of range and similar log) on the following system:

VB 2.1.2, Leopard 10.5.6 and iMac8,1

Trying to boot my Win XP Bootcamp Partition results in the same error as above including log statements.

Re: XP wont boot: Disk Error

Seeing same issue here... Although in my case:
a) I have my WXP partition on /dev/disk0s4
b) I'm using rEFIt to boot between OSX, Linux Ubuntu, and WXPP

VB v2.1.4, OSX v10.5.6 ('Leopard'), MacbookPro3,1

LBA = Logical Block Addressing.

I took a look at the source and it appears to be coming from /VirtualBox-2.2.0_OSE/src/VBox/Devices/PC/BIOS/rombios.c
The question is now why....

The missing piece is the MBR!...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_boot_record

You have to "dump" the MBR from your system into a file (to be referenced into the vmdk file), and "tweak" it slightly...
You can either do it manually with a tool such as iBored (http://apps.tempel.org/iBored/), or use the easier VMware method explained here:
http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic. ... 695#p71695

At least this should solve this LBA issue for good.
(don't forget file permissions and volume permissions before VBox launch)

Then you might encounter other issues, which will be discussed in the referred topic I guess.
Good luck!

Hey mpi,
Thanks for the response. It looks like you were right. I think I'm now where you're at now.

It took me a bit of time though to get it working though because I had an extra NTFS partition that seems to confuse the hell out of VMWare Fusion, VirtualBox, and even rEFIt v0.13!
Moral of the story: if you backup your partition using 'ntfsclone' to a partition in front of it, on the same disk (ie: from /dev/sda4 to /dev/sda3), zero out the 8-byte NTFS 'OEM id' and 'BIOS Parameter Block' in the backup, temporarily (http://www.geocities.com/thestarman3/as ... rHexEd.htm) or else rEFIt will show two (duplicate) icons for your backup partition and never detect the real, bootable, Windows partition after it.

The following output from rEFIt's Partition Inspector may help clarify my setup:

Code: Select all

Current GPT partition table:
 # Start LBA End LBA Type
 1 40 409639 EFI System (FAT)
 2 409640 78555095 Basic Data
 3 78555096 156700551 Basic Data
 4 156700552 234846007 Basic Data
 5 234846008 312319623 Mac OS X HFS+

Current MBR partition table:
 # A Start LBA End LBA Type
 1 1 409639 ee EFI Protective
 2 409640 78555095 83 Linux
 3 78555096 156700551 0d Unknown
 4 * 156700552 234846007 07 NTFS/HPFS
Anyway, so I've gotten past the MBR boot code and initial NTDETECT code, but am now getting stuck at NT kernel hardware detection process with the mass storage controller. On my machine it BSODs with a bugcheck/stop code of 0x7F.

I think I have an idea of how to get past this though (which is how I transplanted my XP partition onto this MacbookPro3,1).

I will test this out and post the results here if I'm successful.

Cheers!

PS: the template feature in that iBored tool is pretty cool! It allowed me to finally realize that the #s in "RW <#> ZERO" in the .VMDK extent descriptions are total cluster sizes of each partition.

Happy it was useful.
Did you dump your MBR into a file that your main vmdk uses, or are you using the original MBR?

Your boot process might be stuck because there are some FAT partitions available before your real NTFS bootable one: then VBox tries to boot from such improper partition, and get stuck.
To fix that, use a dump of your MBR and change unwanted partition types into something awkward (like $2d): VBox would probably get to the proper partition after that.
(see my other post referred in previous message)

PS: about vmdk file description, here is a good pointer:

Hey, thanks for the .PDF, that was exactly what I was looking for earlier. Good thing I didn't find it though or else I would have gone off on a tangent :)

Anyhow, I used the MBR from the one that VMWare Fusion 'tweaked' which, as you pointed out, has $2D inserted for the other partition types.

I checked in iBored and all partition types are set correctly in the VMWare Fusion-generated .VMDK.

The odd thing is that VMWare Fusion is able to boot the machine all the way to the desktop fine.

I suspect the issue with VirtualBox has to do with its experimental SATA driver emulation because when I booted it up in IDE mode, it got all the way to the desktop, but froze when it detected the new virtual 'VGA video card' (I'm not sure if this has something to do with the fact that VMWare Tools got automatically installed in VMWare Fusion earlier. I guess I will try uninstalling that in VMWare and then relaunch the VM in VirtualBox.)

BTW, are you still able to boot natively without any issue? I knew VM products install their own virtual 'hardware' so I created separate hardware profiles ("Native", "Virtual (VMWare)", and "Virtual (VirtualBox)") but I'm a little worried now because I no longer see the NVidia device in Device Manager (even if I show Hidden Devices too).

I guess I will find out in a moment whether I can still boot natively...

EDIT1: Looks like everything is still fine booting with the "Native" profile...

Thanks,

Tried disabling 3D hardware acceleration and increasing the memory allocated but it's still a no-go :(

I even tried Safe Mode, but it seems to freeze once it gets to a one of the drivers while still in text mode... Then again though, Safe Mode doesn't work for me even when booting natively (I think it's one of the side-effects I had from transplanting this XP installation)...

The VirtualBox log file doesn't show much either...

Hi,

You may want to enable IO APIC option in VirtualBox,...and be patient.
This option allowed to boot, log-in until the desktop loads, but it takes a while.
It seems like IO APIC has a big performance hit, but it works...

If it solves the issue, then you may want to have a look at:
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Migrate_Windows and
Q: I got my dual boot Windows XP running in VirtualBox using RAW Disk access, but I keep getting one core fully loaded. How do I solve this?
in http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=8669

That's where I am...

I already had IO APIC enabled :(

As a test though, I tried disabling it and changing the BOOT.INI to use the PIC-based HAL.DLL, but it never actually finishes booting and freezes after a few seconds in the graphical progress bar.

I just noticed the latest version of VirtualBox (v2.2.2) has come out (which supports OpenGL now) so I tried to upgrade to that but when I click on the OSX download link all I get is a blank page with a "." :? I get the same thing for other platforms too, even on another machine (via Firefox).

Is anyone else seeing this? If so, can someone attach/post an alternate download?

Thanks

The VirtualBox download site is temporarily down. We have reported the problem but must wait for them to fix it.

Perryg,
Thanks for the info. I look forward to when the site is back online.

MPI,
It looks like my problem was that I needed to specify the /kernel parameter in the BOOT.INI too. Once I did that, it booted all the way to the login screen but then BSOD-ed on intelppm.sys (Bugcheck 0xCE I think). Per the document you referenced earlier I disabled the intelppm.sys service and it now boots and logs in all the way to the desktop fine. I tried to see if I could disable the intelppm service via the Hardware Profile section in the registry but for some reason it ignores the "Start" [REG_DWORD] = "4" (Disabled) I set there and kept trying to load the driver (and thus BSOD-ing the machine). For now I have it disabled it in the Services section, but I imagine I will need it though when I boot natively.

Also, it seems like I am now able to boot with the APIC option now too. I'm not sure if it was the disabling of the intelppm service, the installation of the Guest Additions, or both, but everything seems to be ok now... except for a slightly high idle CPU usage. For what it's worth, VMWare Fusion v2.0.4 seems to suffer from the same issue too... and if what I've been reading on the VMWare Community forums applies, this is due to guest OS apps that use high resolution timers, which is costly when virtualized (I wonder if this is why VirtualBox decided to go with a PIC implementation instead).
