Guru Meditation ....

Post by Klakro »

Dear all,

since years I have successfully used VB with no problem. But since I updated my MacBook to Ventura (13.3.1) it is not possible to start a VM with WinXP: always it endet with a Guru Meditation.
I hope to get a hint how to solve the issue. I would like to add the log file to this writing, but do not know how to ....

Regards

Ventura requires Virtualbox 7.0. To upgrade Virtualbox you mist first uninstall 6.1 or earlier with all its kexts, reboot, then install 7.0

A copy of the Virtual Machine's "VBox.log" file will be required to help identify the problem which caused the Guru Meditation error. Please provide a 'zipped' a copy of the Log, after the VM has been fully shut down, in your reply message by using the Upload attachment Tab below the message box.

And 6.earlier properly uninstalled beforehand? That was also instructed, but not responded on.

After answering the above question, please provide the log that MultiOS requested.

Hello all,

I did not uninstall the older VB version because I thought it will be done when installing the new VB release (7.0).

Now I have recognized the upload function and attach the log file.

Best regards

The guru meditation error code is:
00:00:05.121790 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
00:00:05.121792 !!
00:00:05.121792 !! VCPU0: Guru Meditation -6890 (VERR_NEM_IPE_0)
It's not one I'm familiar with. Obviously it's a result of an interaction with NEM, the host hypervisor (MacOS hypervisor in this case). Possibly a VirtualBox bug: MacOS NEM support is still quite new.

On the other hand, it's also unusual to see an XP(64bit) ISO mounted in a VM. Why would you install 64bit XP? And then limit the RAM to 1GB? It seems pointless, and being unfamiliar territory - more problem prone too. Back in the day nobody used 64bit XP.

Hello all,

at first I increased the RAM size of the 64 bit VM to 2 GB - again Guru Meditation appeared.

Then I create a second XP VM with 32 bit: it is the same behavior ....

The log file of the least I have included.

@Klakro

I had a quick look at the Log and it identifies your Host Machine as
00:00:02.663379 DMI Product Name: MacBookPro6,1
That would be a 2010 model; and if correct then it does not support the native installation of macOS 13 (Ventura), which suggests you may have installed OpenCore Legacy Patcher to be able to use 'newer' versions of macOS than are supported by your hardware. Is that correct? If "Yes" then there is little chance that VirtualBox 7 will work correctly, as your hardware wouldn't be capable of supporting Apple's Hypervisor Platform.

If MacOS hypervisor (a.k.a. NEM) can be disabled on these "OpenCore" installations then older versions of VirtualBox may still work. Not VirtualBox v7 as that requires NEM.

Hello Mpac, hello all,

do not think, I am not able to purchase a new MacBookPro. But it is much more sustainable to use the existing HW and not to crave for a new one,

My MBP still is still working very reliable and I will use it as long as it does. And I am very grateful for the community who cares for the OpenCore Legacy Patcher.

Best regards
