Mac M2 - Virtual Machine getting aborted

Hi,

I am new to VirtualBox and I am having issues in running a Virtual Machine.
I have Ubuntu VDI setup, when I am trying to start it, it says running and it gets aborted.

I have no real basis for this, nor do I expect to ever see confirmation... but I suspect political pressure. Someone in an upper echelon at Oracle demanded a solution for M1/M2 users regardless of the technical realities, so the devs needed to be seen to make a start - to put a tick in a box.

The original M1 discussion seems to have been unstickied by someone, but I'm still of the opinion that this effort is pointless, because (a) nobody needs an ARM hypervisor (there is no standard ARM based hardware platform to simulate), and (b) a simulated Intel processor can never work as well as the real thing, otherwise all Intel processors would be simulated on something like an ARM.

I understand mpack's view and agree with much of what he has said when looking at at the possibility of:

- an x86 virtualisation application that would need to emulate an ARM CPU in order to run ARM-based Operating Systems; or
- an ARM virtualisation application that would need to emulate an x86 CPU in order to run x86-based Operating Systems

Both options would almost certainly involve a significant performance hit, unless the Host CPU's capability to support that emulation were considerably improved.

However I cannot agree that "nobody needs an ARM hypervisor" as several already exist for Apple's M Series Architecture, including Apple's own 'newish' hypervisor which is available on macOS 13 (Ventura) on both their x86 and M1/2 platforms. Granted the Apple solution is only designed to support macOS and *nix-based VMs (and it is currently only possible to create VMs via the macOS Command Line); but there are already several 'universal' solutions (mostly commercial) already available for Apple's ARM processors on Laptop,Desktop and iOS devices that can run Windows 10/11 for ARM in addition to macOS and *nix options; and the spread of OS releases with an ARM option is growing steadily.

It's probably now down to the CPU manufacturers/computer builders to produce and market ARM-based hardware devices that have similar capabilities to Apple's offerings as most, so far, seem to have been be focussed on producing relatively low-powered mobile options, which would probably be unsuitable for running virtualisation software.

I'm aware of that, but it doesn't help. That's because there is no single hardware platform that could be emulated by an ARM hypervisor. Instead you have to write a set of drivers (a HAL or BSP) that the OS talks to. Every ARM board needs its own specially developed BSP (*), and so would a hypothetical VirtualBox ARM platform. I.e. the only OS's you could run would be those designed exclusively for VirtualBox.

So when I say that "nobody needs an ARM hypervisor" I am not saying there is no desire among hobbyists, or that it's technically impossible, I'm saying that the hardware platform to emulate does not exist and therefore that the business market does not exist.

And (this not aimed at you MultiOS): I don't want to keep having to repeat myself forever, so I do hope that anyone commenting here takes the time to think about the problem before jumping to conclusions about my meaning.

(*) And incidentally there's no standard for BSP's either, so even if you had a BSP you could in practice only run Linux. Or Android since it's effectively a Linux fork.

Guilty! I figured that a "no, M1 is not being developed for" wasn't really correct anymore, since there is an M# version now, and acknowledgement of the M# release was needed, along with a statement that the release wouldn't do anything useful.

I wholeheartedly agree that withdrawing the M# version would be best, and I understand the possibly forced release from the devs' bosses means that the M# version will be here to stay.

Maybe the mods and volunteers could get together on the Volunteers forum for a discussion on what to put in a forum M1/M2 statement sticky?

Well, the "insanely popular" makes it nearly impossible to name a platform.

Out of the ~80,000 participants of the Stack Overflow 2021 Developer Survey, ~45 % used Windows, ~25 % used Linux and ~25 % used macOS as their primary OS. When limited to the ~55,000 professional developers amongst them, the macOS share was even ~30 %. Like any survey, these results are biased of course, but I believe they aren't totally wrong either.

The survey took place in May 2021, so the majority of the professional developers using macOS were most probably using Intel-based Macs, since MacBooks with M1 were only sold for half a year then. But since then, I've read from different sources that Apple has been selling MacBooks with M1/M2 quite well, making M1/M2 SoCs a somewhat "popular de-facto standard hardware platform".

Frankly, I think the insanely popular part is fair assessment. Because of the arithmetic involved, just "popular" is not good enough. Of all MacOS/M1 users, only a fraction will be interested in hypervisors. Of that fraction, only a tiny fraction will be willing to pay. And of that fraction, only a hopefully larger fraction will be willing to pay for YOUR product rather than a competitors. I believe it's hard to make money this way even in the PC market, so what chance MacOS?

And btw, I don't buy that MacOS has 30% of a general market, otherwise I'd know a lot more MacOS users. I believe they are popular in artistic and graphic fields, I can see them succeeding in (say) law practices, but I barely see Macs at all in the engineering and business markets I move in - and I believe this is the main business market for hypervisors.

But, I agree that the Apple M1/M2 platform has the best chance of becoming a popular de-facto standard worth targeting - in the future. Not now. Right now the only people interested in hypervisors for M1 assume they'll be able to run Intel apps on it: and I refuse to discuss that error again.

I barely see Macs at all in the engineering and business markets I move in

I think that it heavily depends on the type of engineering markets you move in. To give one example:

I know a (not necessarily representative) company in Germany which develops embedded hardware. The older software development departments creating the associated embedded software use desktop computers with Ubuntu Linux, IDEs like Eclipse and the C/C++ gcc compilers. The newer software development department creating the cloud-based management software only uses MacBooks as personal developer devices.

In the initial days of this department (~5 years ago), the company had to learn that several of the applicants as a developer demanded a MacBook Pro as their personal development device as a precondition for taking the job, something that was previously unheard of. And they weren't the typical Apple fanboys, some of them happily using mobile phones with the Android OS for example.

Over the last years, I've noticed a major increase of popularity of MacBooks for software development, already in their Intel-based days, but mostly in the strongly growing corner of the Cloud Native Computing Landscape, so there could be a strong correlation.

I hoped that marking the packages clearly as "BETA", putting a "Developer Preview" indicator in the GUI and having a clear statement in the manual was enough that it's not making any sense to even dream about running this routinely. This is a totally different category of "BETA" as we ever have for our other packages, since on x86/x64 we can't possibly break as much during years of development of a new major release than what's currently broken in the x86/x64 emulation on Apple M1/M2.

Yes, it is true that the current packages for M1/M2 are not very useful for end users, and therefore it makes no sense discussing them in this forum (instead the BETA one should be used). The vast majority of VMs do not run yet. This is because it's work in progress, and will remain this way for quite a while since we're still very actively writing the emulation code and trying to find the bugs in the already written code. There is no clear "32-bit VMs work, 64-bit VMs don't" pattern. Some do, some don't. The situation is slowly improving, at least as far as functionality is concerned. In this sense we currently appreciate mostly feedback about what's working, since that's more manageable than what's not working.

What will not improve short term is performance: out first goal is getting the emulation to do the right thing, then make it fast. This will be a significant time in the future. At least in the order of a year, but don't quote me on this. We'll get to it eventually.

Yes, we consider doing ARM virtualization (with a totally unspecified time frame). It's overall a completely different use case than what VirtualBox is known to do well currently. We'll keep VirtualBox fit for the future, at a pace which is possible with the developer team size.
