No USB devices available

Post by RedBike »

Hi all,

I've installed VirtualBox 6.1.30 r148432 under MacOS Big Sur 11.6.2 along with the matching extension pack. I've installed a Windows XP Guest and it run, but I cannot access USB devices. When I try to create a filter I see "<no devices available>". I've searched for the same problem and tried the methods used to address it but none have worked. The USB thumb drive I have connected to test the connection is ejected from the host, so should be available. I've attached the details as per the "asking for help" page. AN interesting thing to note is that VboxManage list usbhost returns "None" when running as me, but when I run it with sudo I see the USB Key and the virtual USB host controller. Both show as "busy", which is perhaps odd given that the USB key is definitely ejected. The output for that is also attached below. I have reinstalled VBox, and restarted the host a few times now.

Is there anything else I can try?

It looks like you found USB basics and troubleshooting, that's good! We have to get the regular user to be able to see USB devices.

I'm not a Mac guru, but Mac has a hint of Linux in it, and Linux sometimes does not find USB devices despite everything set up correctly, because of a missing file in the host OS. Try this:

Thanks @Scottgus1, but none of that seems to be relevant to the MacOS host, although it does appear somehow related given that I can see the usb devices when running the list usbhost command using sudo. There doesn't appear to be any requirement to set group memberships for MacOS though, and the documentation always says that vboxusers group membership is only under Linux host.

I see in the VBoxSVC.log the following message repeated after each attempt to add a USB device filter:
38:04:55.819621 nspr-3 WARNING [COM]: aRC=NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) aIID={16ced992-5fdc-4aba-aff5-6a39bbd7c38b} aComponent={HostWrap} aText={Could not load the Host USB Proxy service: VERR_GENERAL_FAILURE}, preserve=true aResultDetail=0

Does anyone have any thoughts as to why this is failing? I haven't been able to find any reference online.

Is there a Mac permissions checkbox to allow Virtualbox to access USB?

I'm not aware of anything at the Mac level, and there's nothing in the installation instructions.

I have tried again to uninstall and re-install VirtualBox, and this time it worked and I can now see USB devices. This is my 3rd attempt at this, so I'm not sure why it's different this time. It is a later version this time, and maybe that has something to do with it. One thing that was different was this time I didn't need to grant any permissions to VBox. Puzzled...

OK, so now I'm even more puzzled. I restarted the MacBook and now I can't access the USB again....
