Guest doesn't show USB device

Post by daytonabg »

I've added the USB on the Guest filters and tried with both USB 2 and USB 3 (it's actually 3). I also tried to reinstall everything - the USB is still not showing.

Reason: added code tags to show 'vboxmanage list usbhost', which was buried under 'vboxmanage list extpacks'

From the "VBoxManage showvminfo "Kali-Linux-2021.4a-virtualbox-amd64":
USB Device Filters:

Index: 0
Active: yes
Name: ASUS ROG STRIX Arion [0100]
VendorId: 0b05
ProductId: 1932

Revision: 0100
Manufacturer: ASUS
Product: ROG STRIX Arion
Remote: 0
Serial Number: L7D0AP062469
From the log:
00:00:01.747134 [/Devices/usb-xhci/] (level 2)
00:00:01.999318 VUSB: Attached 'HidMouse' to port 1 on RootHub#1 (FullSpeed)
00:00:02.205660 VUSB: Attached '00007fb28f28a510[proxy 0b05:1932]' to port 2 on RootHub#1 (FullSpeed)
00:00:53.486307 VUSB: Detached '00007fb28f28a510[proxy 0b05:1932]' from port 2 on RootHub#1
USB 3 is being used, and the USB device is being inserted into the VM space for the OS to pick up and load drivers for.

Curiously, though, the device, an ASUS ROG STRIX Arion, is coming in as a "Fullspeed" USB device, same speed as the mouse.
Asus's website says:
ROG Strix Arion M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure—USB3.2 GEN2 Type-C (10 Gbps), Dual USB-C to C and USB-C to A Cables
I don't know if USB 3.2 is a problem or not.

Please try a basic USB 2 or 3 flash thumbdrive, see if that shows up in the VM OS.

One thing I see is that you apparently found USB basics and troubleshooting, which recommends for the USB Filter:
Delete all values except Name, VendorID and ProductID
Note that this should not influence your particular setup for now positively or negatively, since the device is being forwarded to the VM with the filter as-is. But it is a point to consider for future attempts with USB.
