VirtualBox Issues with Big Sur 11.6

Post by TK_Dev »

No matter what I try, VirtualBox on Mac OS X Big Sur crashes.

I'm using version: 6.1.28 r147628 (Qt5.6.3)

I know others have posted about this in previous versions of Big Sur. I tried things that were suggested, none of them worked.

VirtualBox was fine until it prompted me it had an update and as soon as I downloaded and installed it, the problems started. I am unable to open any of my VMs. For my Windows 10 VM I have I get this:

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine MS Windows Pro.
The virtual machine 'MS Windows Pro' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1).
Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component:
MachineWrap
Interface:
IMachine {85632c68-b5bb-4316-a900-5eb28d3413df}

Can someone offer a solution if you've seen this lately?

I suggest you try the following:

1. Mount the VirtualBox installation .dmg
2. Run the Uninstall script
3. Open System Preferences->Security & Privacy and unlock the General pane
4. Install VirtualBox
5. Follow any prompts you may see in the Security & Privacy pane. You may be prompted to reboot.

I have been busy, but I wanted to share this did help me, but only step 5 was the issue. I discovered after installing, Oracle needed approval within System Preferences > Security & Privacy pane. There was a message there and I did have to unlock the pane first. I approved the action in the message, restarted VirtualBox for good measure, started it back up and things worked as expected with my VMs. There really should be some installation instructions that mention this. Perhaps there are? If so, where can I find them? I wasted a good hour, before I got frustrated and posted here.
