Win 10 Guest on 2016 Macbook - no 3D acceleration

Post by Lus1phur »

On Catalina 10.15.7. Latest VBox and Guest additions (downloaded today).
Guest is set up with 2 cores, 8GB and maximum VRAM. 3D accel is ticked.

However, 3D is definitely not working in the guest. 3D apps crash and the start menu is see through and unusable.

Anyone have any ideas please? Some googling about hasn't really helped.

Logs attached.

The see-through Start menu under 3D acceleration is known and can be resolved by turning off Windows 10's Transparency: Settings > Personalization > Colors > disable Transparency Effects.

The log has the usual entries showing 3D acceleration working. I can't see any indication of failing 3D, but I don't know much about how failed 3D would look in the log. It could be that the app you want to run is not compatible with Virtualbox's 3D acceleration.

Did you try running the app during the posted log?

Hey, thanks for looking.

This seems relevant - viewtopic.php?f=2&t=98570

If I turn off 3D accel before launching the VM the app will load but with atrocious (unusable) performance (and the transparency issue is resolved). If I turn on 3D accel it just throws a DX error which is basically saying 3D isn't available.

EDIT - The app in question is an old (20 years) DX9 game. Runs fine on Win 10 natively.
