Is not possible install VirtualBox 7.0.4 in macOS El Capitan

Post by manueljordan »

For macOS El Capitan 10.11.6 was downloaded VirtualBox 7.0.4 as VirtualBox-7.0.4-154605-OSX.dmg. Was checked/verified the sha256 checksum.
When is tried to install it (command + arrow down), appears the following message:

The Figure does not appear, please open: https://i.stack.imgur.com/Lvv0I.png

Why appears this? How to fix it? The .dmg file was downloaded and verified (checksum) twice and happens the same.

NOTE I use VirtualBox 6.1.x (38 as the latest) in peace.

VirtualBox 7.0.x is only supported on macOS Catalina (10.15) and later.

Thanks for the reply

Ouch, I understand the situation

Does have sense if is requested to Oracle request support for old macOS as Host? It seems 6.1.x series has support for old macos yet.
According with VirtualBox binaries it indicates Version 6.1 will remain supported until December 2023.

Where is the correct place to ask for that request? Mailing lists or Bugtracker?

BTW - What is the official link?, The one shared by you or 1.4. Supported Host Operating Systems?

Thank You

You can ask for enhancements in the Bugtracker, and supporting an earlier host OS would be an enhancement. However, there's probably a reason why the devs didn't program 7.0 for El Capitan, same as why Windows 7 and earlier aren't supported anymore: dwindling usage in the wild. Ultimately, economic concerns drive development (the "money makes the world go round" paradigm) and the bosses see that fewer paying Oracle customers continue to use El Capitan/7 & earlier.

Meanwhile, "XYZ will not be supported past mm/dd/yyyy" doesn't mean it won't continue to work. Virtualbox back to 4.0 is still available for download and use. Problems won't get developed for, though, and eventually OS's inside the VMs will have an upper limit, too.

As scottgus1 states plus:

AFAIK it would probably not be possible for VirtualBox 7.0.x to be made compatible with macOS versions prior to Catalina because of the system security changes that have been gradually implemented by Apple in each new macOS release since Catalina, e.g. the deprecation of 3rd Party Kexts; and changes to the associated 'known developer' authorisation process that older versions of macOS permitted, plus the full implementation of a 'relatively new' Apple Hypervisor platform (which only provides direct support for macOS and Linux VMs). There's also the issue that the volume of Apple users with Intel-based systems is in steady decline, so it would make little business sense for Oracle to increase support for a dwindling market; and it seems certain that Apple will already be planning for the end of its own support for Intel-based systems.

Sometimes you just have to accept that its time to move on, or accept that the best option is to remain with software versions that continue to work. At present, there is still a year of official support for VirtualBox 6.1.xx; and many VirtualBox users would probably say that 7.0 still has some significant teething problems that need to be resolved to make an upgrade worthwhile, other than for testing.

Thanks for the feedback

Agree that has no sense for Oracle be keeping efforts to support old operating systems and for hardware to be deprecated soon. But if possible to bring that support .... is well welcome
Therefore I must breath with 6.1 until December 2023 - at least is a year.

Thanks for the orientation to upload/load images.
