There are also a lots of kernel panics because of the virtualbox.

Have you tried using VirtualBox-6.1.28 ? I was seeing kernel panics before upgrading to that release but they are now fixed.

I downgraded to 1.6.26 because my Vagrant doesn't setup the correct IP addresses of the VM. It turns out that this was due to a breaking change in the vbox networking introduced into the 1.6.28, but documented only on the manual?!? I'm now upgrading to 1.6.28 and will see what will happen.

I am also trying the same thing. 1.6.26 did not work for me.

Update: 1.6.28 worked!

When I upgrade to Monterey from Big Sur Intel at the end of the process i got a popup window message from Apple telling that VirtualBox won't run on that update. They could have told before. So I think that Apple decided that VirtualBox is not a trustable application and locked it. I don't think they would revert and allow VirtuaBox in the future. So far the solution is to downgrade to Big Sur which is a very anoying task.
What you are saying is not quite true @zenon1. If you read the popup carefully, it is saying the VirtualBox is trying to install extensions that *may* not be supported in the future.

There are known problems with VirtualBox on macos Monterey:
1. There is a crash when trying to start a "headless" VM. The devs are aware of this, have apologised for missing it in their testing and have said a fix is on the way. https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/20636

2. The kernel drivers (kext) that VirtualBox uses are not being loaded automatically after a system boot. They must be loaded manually. https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/20637

I hope that helps
Hi,

Yes that helps. Should Apple or Oracle solve this problem ?

After installing MacOs 12 (Monterey) the new operating system does not allow windows 10 to be opened with Virtualbox. The following error is reported: "Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908) Make sure the kernel module has been loaded successfully. where: suplibOsInit what: 3 VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (-1908) - The support driver is not installed. On linux, open returned ENOENT. "You can no longer change your mac's privacy settings. How do I use Windows again with the new Mac operating system?

After reboot, virtualbox's kext files are not loaded automatically. Hence, you need to load them manually with the following commands:

Code: Select all

sudo kextload -b org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv;
sudo kextload -b org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetFlt;
sudo kextload -b org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetAdp;
sudo kextload -b org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB;

Any update on this bug? I've tried the manual installation of the drivers and I still get the same kernel driver not found error

After re-installing to 6.1.28 it seems to work now.

I am using 6.1.28 on Monterey on Macbook Pro 2019 16".

I upgraded to Monterey a couple days ago (big mistake). When it booted, it told me that legacy kernel extensions were not supported.

I uninstalled VB 6.0.26 and installed .28.

- I can get it to run ONLY:
- if I run through the installation script again from the DMG *after every boot*.
- if I use normal mode (headless does not work)

I believe the first issue has to do with the kernel extensions not loading when the system boots, but staying in memory after running the installation script.
I believe the second issue is that this is free software and Oracle wants you to upgrade to paid VMWare, so they don't have much incentive to test or fix this on new releases of Mac OS.

Also, the reason I know about reinstalling after every boot up is because my Macbook has crashed several times after the OS update, so be warned. Jobs is doing backflips in his grave.

I installed the 6.1.29 test build today (mentioned on https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/20636) and it fixed my issue of not being able to use headless mode on Monterey.

Yep. It's also not loading the kext files automatically upon macos reboot...

Not knowing what a 'kext' was, I Googled it, and ran across this https://support.apple.com/en-au/guide/d ... 65d329/web which might explain why these thingies aren't loading?

Hi,

The trick is that Apple rejects these kernel extensions which now with Monterey are not considered
as belonging to the OS system. Apple as usually is a bit wothering. Oracle can't do much with this restriction.
Only Apple can allow these extensions loading at start up. May be in 10 years they will understand that they were
a bit too restrictive .
