[Solved] Linux VM freezes on Mac host

Post by Beans3 »

I wonder if someone could help me.

My VM regularly 'freezes' despite being allocated it sufficient resources from the host while at the same time that host not being starved of resources.

Attached are the logs from a complete VM run and the output of the command kextstat | grep -v com.appl
$ kextstat | grep -v com.apple

Kudos! Both a ZIPPED log, and the 3rd party list of kexts! Someone did their homework... ;)
Just some really, really minor details; the kext list was small enough to include verbatim, you shouldn't save simple text as RTF, and finally don't change the extensions of ".log" files. But as I said, really minor details...

You selected "Linux 2.6 / 3.x /4.x (64bit)". Why? You have the more specific option of Ubuntu (64).
00:00:01.830977 NumCPUs <integer> = 0x0000000000000002 (2)
00:00:02.078411 CPUM: Physical host cores: 2
Your i5-7267U has 2 CPU cores. You gave them both to your guest. Your host is going to starve. You shouldn't give more than 1 CPUs to your guest.

03:37:26.442684 Console::powerDown(): A request to power off the VM has been issued (mMachineState=Stopping, InUninit=0)
It's a miracle that your VM actually run for 3 1/2 hours! The Guest Additions (GAs) that came with VirtualBox 5.2.6 had an issue with Linux guests if 3D acceleration was enabled. See the "Important" paragraph in the Downloads section.

You could also try the latest test builds, especially with all the Spectre/Meltdown patches coming in from all sides. And your 16/Feb/2018 kernel, certainly has these fixes applied.

Thanks Socratis.

I made the changes you suggested.

Unfortunately, after the installation of the new Guest Additions for 5.2.6 recommended in the Downloads section (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads) I could not boot up of the VM, I just get a blank black screen with just a cursor intermittently blinking. I have restored from a previous snapshot and will try again.

You are supposed to download a new version for the GAs ISO and *not* follow the standard procedure, right? Plus if you disable the 3D acceleration, you should be able to see the screen again...

But, as I said, I would strongly suggest the test builds...

Yes, I installed GA via the terminal and didn't follow the standard procedure (Devices/Insert Guest Additions CD Image/etc).

It doesn't matter though, as i have installed one of the test builds which seems much slicker and, so far, more stable. Thanks again for the advice, socratis.

Great, thanks for the feedback. Marking as [Solved].
And since this turned out to be a "Linux Guest" issue, I'm moving it from the "OSX Hosts" section.
