Windows 7 on VirtualBox SLOOOOW with MacBook Air (IMPERATIVE!!)

Post by Kimmykiki »

Hello,

I have a Macbook Air 13 pouces with 4gb memory RAM. My Mac is a MacOs Sierra 10.12.3. The processor is "1,6 GHz Intel Core i5"
I have downloaded a "VirtualBox 5.1.20 114629". I have installed in it Windows 7.

All the details about the configuration of my virtual box is on the zip attached with this topic.

My problems are :
- My virtual box is too slow even if I put 2gb of memory ram (I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO)....
- I don't know how I can put it in my external hard driver

Is there a solution to make my virtual box stoppe bugging my macbook air ?
I'm in an internship and i can't use some software because of the slowness of my mac due to the virtual box...

(sorry for the mistakes I speak french usually)

Thanks for the help.

Before even looking at anything, I'm almost certain where the problem is:

OSX 10.12 needs 3 GB of RAM, just to say "Bonjour". If you add a virtual machine with 2 GB of RAM, you're getting at 5GB. You don't have that much. But, to make sure, please do the following:
  • Follow a "start the VM from cold-boot"/"observe error"/"shutdown the VM" cycle.
  • With the VM shut down completely (not paused or saved), right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager and select "Show Log".
  • Save only the first "VBox.log", ZIP it and attach it to your response (see the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form).

PS. I have removed the png with the settings. 1) it doesn't tell us everything like the log will, 2) it's five times larger in size compared to the logs. Trying to save a (virtual) tree or two ;)

  1. As I suspected, you do NOT have enough RAM. You are assigning memory to your guest, that you do not have available. Either close some applications on the host, buy more RAM for the host, or reduce the amount of RAM assigned to the guest:
    00:00:02.085315 Host RAM: 4096MB (4.0GB) total, 1163MB available
    00:00:02.383773 RamSize <integer> = 0x0000000080000000 (2 147 483 648, 2 048 MB)
  2. You have assigned all your CPUs to the VM. The host is going to run low on resources, since VirtualBox cares about physical processors, not logical ones. See: CPU Cores versus threads:
    00:00:02.383769 NumCPUs <integer> = 0x0000000000000002 (2)
00:00:02.764163 CPUM: Logical host processors: 4 present, 4 max, 4 online, online mask: 000000000000000f
00:00:02.764168 CPUM: Physical host cores: 2

OK, for some reason, either my eyes were doing things, but I saw two posts from 'Kimmykiki'. I deleted the 2nd one that seemed like a repeat of the 1st one and they're both gone!

@Kimmykiki
I'm really sorry about this, something went really wrong here, but from what I see, now both mpack and myself have seen the log. I have it still on my HD, so I could upload it if you want me to.

EDIT: Mystery solved from the moderator's logs: I deleted one, mpack deleted the other. 0-2!!!

Ok I'm note very a "geek" person. I'm just a girl who wants her virtual box to work with her macbook air... I'm in a internships and its kind of "unprofessional" ...
So the solutions you suggests ?

About the CPU and the RAM ?
Should I put only 1 GB of RAM for the VB (I think its not enough...)
And about my question of the external device storage ? I have a friend who uses it but I don't know how...

Thanks :)

You can't afford 1GB either. The bald fact is that you need a better PC. Failing that you can probably get away with allocating 700MB RAM to the guest, plus 48MB graphics RAM. You can try sticking with 2 cores, but be warned that this represents 100% of the CPU capacity of your PC, leaving nothing for the host alone to use. Therefore overheads in the guest and host will affect the other.
