No USB devices connected

Post by fantomframe »

Hello,
Sorry for asking about USB, but I have researched myself to death. All I ever get is no USB devices connected. As Far as I know I have everything installed correctly. Virtualbox Runs and Win10 starts up and I did all the Win10 upgrades and all the MX-19.2 upgrades. Any help that you can provide to get USB devices to show and usable with the Guest OS's would be helpful.

Here is some info about system.
Host OS: new install MX-19.2
Guest OS: new Windows 10 pro by way of media creation tool
Virtualbox: Version 6.1.2_Debian r135662
Extensions:
VNC 6.1.2r135662
Extension Pack 6.1.2r135662

I also ran vboxmanage list and got the following results. The Sentinel HL is the one I am after.

Carefully go through USB basics and troubleshooting. If you finish all the steps 1-7 and cannot get your USB device into the guest OS, carefully post the outputs of the commands in step 8 as text in

Code: Select all

 tags, not screenshots. Zip and post the logs step 8 call for, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

Please install VirtualBox, not the Debian fork you currently have, and try again. If you want to continue using the Debian tribute band version you will need to go to their forums for support.

okay,
Didn't know there is a difference, I originally had Virtualbox installed and had the same problem, so I reinstalled from the package installer. Will work on going back today.

Your 'Scott' account is in the 'vboxusers' group, which is good.

The Vboxc.log shows a lot of this:
Could not load the Host USB Proxy service: VERR_DISK_FULL
(I doubt your disk is full, but do check it.)

The VboxSVC errors may be the cause of this:
fantomframe wrote:VBoxManage list usbhost
Host USB Devices:

<none>
However your previous command list 'sudo vboxmanage list usbhost' did list USB devices.

This topic might have a solution: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=92187#p443636:
bigbaldbob wrote:VBoxManage list usbhost

Results in: "None"

However:
sudo VBoxManage list usbhost

Results in list of all (several) USB devices.

...although I was in vboxusers group, the VM did NOT have permissions for vboxusers. I am not sure how this changed.

Resolution:
Changed permissions on VM to "groups" "vboxusers".
I am not certain on how 'bigbaldbob' did this. It seems to me that permissions on Virtualbox itself might need the change, because vboxmanage is part of Virtualbox, not a particular VM.

BTW:
fantomframe wrote:VBoxManage showvminfo Windows 10
...
Syntax error: Invalid parameter '10'
A syntax-errored command isn't going to help. Guest names with spaces in the name need to be in double quotes:

VBoxManage showvminfo "Windows 10"

You have no USB filters configured for your guest:
fantomframe wrote:USB Device Filters:

<none>
Once you get the big problem fixed, USB filters will provide the most robust way to get the USB devices in the guest, see the troubleshooting tutorial.

However, the big problem lies before this point. Your regular non-sudo account cannot see any USB devices, whereas sudo can:
fantomframe wrote:VBoxManage list usbhost
Host USB Devices:

<none>
fantomframe wrote:sudo VBoxManage list usbhost
[sudo] password for Scott:
Host USB Devices:
<several devices>
This needs to be fixed first. How, I don't know. I only have BigBaldBob's quote and link above. It apparently involves permissions for the Virtualbox application has or what group it is in. I'm no Linux guru, I don't know how to implement BigBaldBob's advice. You might have to wait unto a Linux guru comes along.

Virtualbox does not see the devices at all, it is blank.
I manually configured the security dongle and a mass storage and nothing. Could not mount them.
Thank you for trying to help and advice. I use linux only, but I have a specific piece of software that only runs in windows and uses a security dongle. With my lack of guru-ism I am stuck for now.
