USB audio interface Scarlett 4i4 3GEN no output sound

Post by edufissure »

First of all i have a question: if you have a linux host with windows 10 guest, where should i post for bugs/problems in the forum of linux hosts or in the windows guests ?
Said this, i have an scarlet4i4 focusrite 3gen audio interface, after several tries and problems i get it to setup and make it work.... but i have no output sound in my speakers.

Seems that the setup is correct and in windows works, but some kind the sound gets lost from output of the guest system.

The distinction between host or guest forum choice is hard to determine. Generally if the guest won't start, it's typically a host problem. If the guest environment starts and stays open then the issue is probably a guest problem. Though guest problems might be caused by host problems.

If we figure out the topic should be in a different forum we'll move it.

USB problems can be troubleshot with USB basics and troubleshooting. If you finish all the steps 1-7 and cannot get your USB device into the guest OS, carefully post the outputs of the commands in step 8 as text in

Code: Select all

tags, not screenshots. Zip and post the logs step 8 call for, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

Socratis ive read that usb troubleshooting but i think is not an usb problem, as the soundcard is detected, and seems to work as is present in the sound settings in windows 10 and as you can see it has sound output ( the bar is moving so something is being sent from usb audio). But if its needed i would do whatever can help to sove the problem

You appear to have an active USB filter and the guest is receiving the USB device. It was attached to the guest for almost two minutes in the log. The screenshot from the Windows 10 guest does show the device selected as the chosen sound output device.

So the Virtualbox portion of this setup is confirmed. It appears that the Windows OS has control of the USB device.

So Virtualbox is working, and the problem lies inside the Windows 10 OS. I have had a failing sound output on an otherwise working sound card, and the Windows troubleshooter found and fixed a problem. Did you 'solucionar problemas'?

This issue does not appear to be a Virtualbox problem. Try pretending that Virtualbox is not involved, that you are working in a real Windows 10 PC, and ask the Focusrite help forums if they have any ideas.

I tried solucionar problemas... i think the problem is with virtualbox for this reasons:

1 - The "normal/usual" sound output from the motherboard works ok. The problem is with the sound of Scarlett.
2 - I have the same configuration in a laptop with only windows 10 and the sound is ok.

I have read that vbox has problems with usb devices ( i have a hard drive that is not recognized by virtualbox as is connected to port usb 3.0). Also have problems with usb hubs...

It cost a lot to install and setup the usb device ( a lot of times the usb device was not recognized and was taken as usb unknown device). Dont know why after many tries, i get it to setup.

Thanks for your help id reply here if i have any progress.

Check your 10 guest's Device Manager to be sure the sound card drivers are loaded properly and that the device is working according to Windows. Checking on what a Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 actually is, I find it's a combination input/output super-fancy sound breakout box. Do the inputs work?

If the device is fully recognized in the Windows 10 OS (same as it is recognized on the laptop, you can compare results) then that's all Virtualbox can do.

Once a USB device is passed to the guest, the host no longer has control of it. So the sound output of the physical motherboard does not indicate failure or success of the USB device.

I understand that.
Nevertheless we have to admit that, when a very same "OS + USBdevice + device drivers" combination works well in the host system and doesn't work inside a VBox guest, it's not that unreasonable to suspect that the problem may have something to do with the running virtualization software.
Indeed, it seems to me a fairly reasonable hypothesis. Maybe wrong but reasonable, not to say obvious.
One that would immediately come to mind to anyone with a bit of experience with computers and the like.

Why are you making an argumentative (and incorrect) point about a post from last year? Scott stated a fact - your intuitions are not required.
