High resource use

I'm running vb on Ubuntu 6.1 and it starts very slow. It hangs on spawning for a long time and then it restores my vm. Restoring the memory takes a long time as well. the top command shows that vb is using up to 80 and 90 percent of the cpu. Are there any things I can check or do?
