Ubuntu 16.04 guest can't resize with VMSVGA

I have another VM: ubuntu 64 bit 16.04.

If I set VMSVGA, the guest display is never resized to the size of the window. If I set VBoxSVGA the performance are very low, but the guest display can be resized to the window size.

I split your post from the VirtualBox 6.0 brutally slow with AMD Threadripper 2 thread, and gave it an appropriate title. We like to observe the "One issue, one thread" rule...

You should *not* choose the VBoxSVGA option, except _only_ for Windows guest. You should choose either VBoxVGA (no "S") or VMSVGA for a Linux guest. Since VMSVGA is not working for you, then search for an existing ticket. If you can't find one, please let us know before creating a new one, here.

Can you try to resize the guest from within the guest and not by dragging the VM window borders? To something more ... computer friendly? I don't know too many physical monitors with a 3437x1743 resolution...

That sounds like a HiDPI monitor, is that correct? If so, did you go to the VirtualBox Preferences (not the VM Settings) » Display » Scale Factor » set it to 200%. And then set the VM resolution to something more manageable, like 1280x800?
