Ubuntu Xenial -abrupt error after kernel upgraded to 4.4.0-143-generic

Any suggestions:??? Running Xenial DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 16.04.5 LTS" XFCE..Performed update to kernel 4.4.0-143-generic.
sudo dpkg -l | grep virtualbox
ii virtualbox-6.0 6.0.4-128413~Ubuntu~xenial amd64 Oracle VM VirtualBox
ii virtualbox-dkms 5.1.38-dfsg-0ubuntu1.16.04.2 all x86 virtualization solution - kernel module sources for dkms
Launching VBox generates error
The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module
available for the current kernel (4.4.0-143-generic) or it failed to
load. Please recompile the kernel module and install it by

           sudo /sbin/vboxconfig
Therefore, ran following:
sudo /usr/lib/virtualbox/vboxdrv.sh setup
vboxdrv.sh: Stopping VirtualBox services.
vboxdrv.sh: Starting VirtualBox services.
vboxdrv.sh: Building VirtualBox kernel modules.
vboxdrv.sh: failed: Look at /var/log/vbox-setup.log to find out what went wrong
.

You need to clean up your system. 5.1.38 shouldn't be there.

Why did you run something different from what it was suggested???

OK..completed. Should I attempt t download "dkms for 6.0" ?
I have tried the "normal" way from Vbox site, same error..FYI, also tried "VirtualBox-6.0.5-128831-Linux_amd64.run" = same error w/o the dkms..
Why did you run something different from what it was suggested???
was searching for clues, ran across the command that performed same function as /sbin/vboxconfig and that happened to be the command on xterm as I was doing this posting..

DKMS has not been needed by VirtualBox since 5.1.x.

I would clean my system from all things VirtualBox. Except of course your VMs and your settings. Then I would do a clean install from the Linux distributions (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads). Follow the instructions there. You can even add VirtualBox as a repository, so you could use your traditional install/upgrade/uninstall tools.

Done per
clean install from the Linux distributions ).
Factly, I rebuilt ubuntu 16.04 fresh and followed instructions on said site virtualbox.org_wiki/_Linux_Downloads. Tried 5.2 and 6.0 ...Still error persists

Did you do that?

And why there's a VBoxManage command trying to act on a non-registered VM? What's that doing there?

no..did not do it..Why should it be needed? the new kernel came with the apt update. NOTE: this is a FRESH new install..

you said,
And why there's a VBoxManage command trying to act on a non-registered VM? What's that doing there?
VBox 6.0 uninstalled...5.2 was installed..GUI opened and therefore created a VM. Upon launch, error showed up..

NOTE: This message arrived during install completion of Vbox 6 or 5.2 ==> the GUI did open

something not correct here..never had this issue before...dont know much about kernel programming either...

Just follow the instructions please. You don't have to be a kernel programmer, it's a freakishly simple command:
sudo /sbin/vboxconfig
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

Done! Could this be an issue with the vboxkernel and its associate headers for 440-143 or the linux kernel ^headers?
After all this time, I sense something is correctly not programmed to coordinate upstream between vbox and ubu-repo. (interested in feedback)

final attempt: Going to downgrade ubu 16.04 kernel and see what happens:

Result:
sudo /usr/lib/virtualbox/vboxdrv.sh setup
vboxdrv.sh: Stopping VirtualBox services.
vboxdrv.sh: Starting VirtualBox services.
vboxdrv.sh: Building VirtualBox kernel modules.
vboxdrv.sh: failed: Look at /var/log/vbox-setup.log to find out what went wrong
Then did this;
sudo modprobe vboxdrv
modprobe: FATAL: Module vboxdrv not found in directory /lib/modules/4.4.0-143-generic
NOTE:
Factly, I rebuilt ubuntu 16.04 fresh and followed instructions on said site virtualbox.org_wiki/_Linux_Downloads. Tried 5.2 and 6.0 ...Still error persists

Hi, I experience the exact same issue.

I am curious why you would say:
socratis wrote:You need to clean up your system. 5.1.38 shouldn't be there.
As far as I can tell it is the latest version of the package in the official 16.04 repository [1].

Just like starbluedottts I tried to use 5.2 and 6.0 via the official oracle Downloads page (after purging all previous virtualbox packages and checking that there were no leftovers via "locate virtualbox").
Resulting in the same problem (vobxdrv kernel module could not be loaded).

I suspected that it might have to do with the change to kernel version 4.4.0-143. The changelog I found here [2] mentions some changes to kvm, but I'm not even sure if vbox uses kvm - speculations and I'm way over my head.

I would very much appreciate any solution / workaround that does not involve distribution upgrade.

Additionally, here are the logs for running vboxconfig

Code: Select all

$ sudo /sbin/vboxconfig
vboxdrv.sh: Stopping VirtualBox services.
vboxdrv.sh: Starting VirtualBox services.
vboxdrv.sh: Building VirtualBox kernel modules.
vboxdrv.sh: failed: Look at /var/log/vbox-setup.log to find out what went wrong.

There were problems setting up VirtualBox. To re-start the set-up process, run
  /sbin/vboxconfig
as root.
And the content of /var/log/vbox-setup.log:

Code: Select all

As far as I can tell it is the latest version of the package in the official 16.04 repository [1].
The official Ubuntu repository carries a fork of VirtualBox. If you want support in these forums, you should get the official VirtualBox from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads. You can even add VirtualBox as a repository, so you could use your traditional install/upgrade/uninstall tools.

If that doesn't work you should try the latest test builds (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Testbuilds).
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

Hello:

I am having the exact same error, on a busted up Ubuntu 16.04 workstation, and VBox 5.x after my machine did a security kernel upgrade to 4.4.0-143. First I upgraded to VBox 6.04, and that didn't fix anything. Then I looked at the kernel my machine updated to, 4.4.0-143. My machine had just upgraded to that from 4.4.0-142, and rebuilt the DKMS because of some NVIDIA drivers that shouldn't even be on this box. I tried going back to the Linux 4.4.0-142 kernel at boot-time in Grub, and from there I was able to successfully rebuild the VBox drivers with the /sbin/vboxconfig command, and then my VBox VM's started properly and are working fine again.

So there is definitely something wrong with Vbox, both 5 and 6, and the latest 'shipping' kernel in Ubuntu 16.04, 4.4.0-143. Try reverting back to the 4.4.0-142 kernel, if you can, and rebuild the VBox driver from there.

Hope this helps someone.

There are known build issues with the guest additions some of the 4.4 kernels one of which is the get_user_pages() compile error. One such is described in ticket [Fixed] vboxdrv build failure, VBox 5.2.26 32-bit, kernel 4.4.168 (#18315).

You should download and install the latest Test Buildsr128999 and later, for both 5.2.27 and 6.0.5.

Using Ubuntu 14.04 and VirtualBox 4.3.36 I ran into the same issue with kernel 4.4.0-143. For now I revert to the previous 4.4.0-142; I tried enough to state that it does NOT depend on the VirtualBox version: besides the one I mention the latest 5,2 and 6.0 suffer from the same issue. So this looks like what ChexStah reports, but now for 14.04.
