No keyboard input in full screen mode

Post by netsrak »

Host: Ubuntu 18.04 X-Server, Gnome

Guest: Windows 10 1803 17134.48

Problem: When switching to full screen mode no keyboard input is possible, only the mouse works. Switching back to window mode everything works normal.

The guest was working normal until i upgraded my ubuntu from 17.10 to 18.04

Any ideas?

Please provide a VM log file. With the VM fully shut down, right click it in the GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (no other file) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

Attached is the log. I switched to full screen after some minutes, tried to key in text and switched back.

00:00:00.856186 Package type: LINUX_64BITS__UBUNTU_17_04
That is the wrong package, that's not the one for 18.04. That could definitely be a problem, so much so, that I'm not sure if the rest of the analysis is rendered moot or not, but here it goes...
00:00:00.856178 Host RAM: 7884MB (7.7GB) total, 3954MB (3.8GB) available
00:00:01.096458 RamSize <integer> = 0x00000000bf100000 (3 205 496 832, 3 057 MB, 2.9 GB)
00:00:01.096873 VRamSize <integer> = 0x0000000010000000 (268 435 456, 256 MB)
You're pushing the limits of your available RAM, maybe lower the guest allocated RAM to 2048 MB? If your host's demands increase after you've started the VM, you may run into host starvation issues.
00:00:01.096839 [/Devices/usb-xhci/0/Config/] (level 4)
You know that Win7 does *not* have USB3 support, and you have to install additional drivers, right?
00:00:01.589314 [/USB/HidMouse/] (level 2)
I do *not* see that line in your log. Do you use a "PS/2 Mouse"? Actually, right-click on the VM, "Show in Explorer/Finder/<something?>", ZIP that selected ".vbox" file and attach it to your reply.

Thanks for your help, you nailed it :) it was the package. I forgot to install the 18.04 virtualbox after upgrading. Now its working without problems.

Your other points:

RAM: i will live with it for the moment as long as it works.

The VM is a Windows 10 VM although its named Windows 7..... I upgraded it some years ago but never changed the name :)

PS/2 mouse is enabled.

Attached is the .vbox file

Sorry, happy to early.
After some time using the VM i went to full screen mode again and keyboard is not working.
After a reboot of the VM it works again. Looks like something else is involved in this.
I will further investigate it.

I have the same problem in arch linux as host. Virtualbox version 5.2.12 and Windows 10 1803 as guest. If I start the guest in fullscreen directly I can write but if I go to windowed mode and then I switch back to fullscreen the keyboard stops working on the guest. I can type in windowed mode though.

I still have this problem too but only sometimes. I am still looking for a pattern, sometimes it works in full screen, sometimes not. In windows mode keyboard always works.
