[Solved] VERR_REM_VIRTUAL_CPU_ERROR on booting Windows 7 Guest

Post by themetman »

I am running VirtualBox Version 5.2.10 with Windows 7 32 bit Guest inside Linux Mint 18 64bit. The Intel Virtulisation is enabled in the BIOS.
The Linux Host has 16Gb Memory, and the Windows Guest is allocated 2Gb
It had been running fine for ages, but there was a hangup with an error message as Windows boots which starts as:

Code: Select all

A critical error has occurred while running the virtual machine and the machine execution has been stopped......
I upgraded VirtualBox from 5.1 to 5.2 and I get the same error.
Here is what I think is the relevant bit of the log.

Code: Select all

I have found no menion of this error on the forum
I have included the Log, the png image just shows the Windows Starting Screen (not very exciting!) so not included and the settings for the Virtual Guest.
I would be grateful for a cure for this to keep my wife happy using the occasional Windows Program!

Please edit your message and replace the two parts of the log with a ZIPPED version of the single log. Easier for us to analyze, easier on the server's burden, it's going to save a (virtual) tree or two... ;)
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Great! Thanks for that, appreciate it!
00:00:00.288378 HM: HMR3Init: Falling back to raw-mode: VT-x is disabled in the BIOS for all CPU modes
You will need to address/fix this. Your i7-3770K most certainly supports VT-x, so it's a matter of enabling it in the BIOS and making sure that nothing else has an exclusive hold on the VT-x. See your PC's manufacturer help on how to do this.

Well, I Definitely have Intel Virtualization Technology enabled in the BIOS, Hyper-Threading Technology Enabled or Disabled or Auto makes no difference.
I have searched all over the place to try and find out how I can find out if there is something using the VT-x in Linux Mint (Ubuntu) . Can you tell me how to do this?
Is there something in /proc/ to look for?

I have nothing running, just boot into the system, and run the Client.

very odd.....

BINGO!!!!!
I turned the computer off at the wall for a few minutes rather than just rebooting, and it has picked up the BIOS change and now boots.
I am MOST grateful for your very swift and useful response.

Did you shut down the host for 1 min? I'm talking pull the power cord...

I haven't heard of a single program in any OS that can point and say "This is using VT-x".

We posted at the same time, within seconds... ;)
But I still decided to post mine, just because I was indeed trying to steer you in that directions, but most importantly for the 2nd point...

Glad you got it going. And thank you for marking the topic as [Solved]... ;)
