Mouse freezes in Windows and Linux guests on Ubuntu 18.04

Post by helasz »

Hi All,

I did upgrade my host from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04 (server edition with openbox) apparently just fine. I did remove the Virtualbox v5.2.8 (Xenial repo) and installed instead Virtualbox 5.2.10 from Bionic Beaver's one. (I am using three monitors in some of my guest OS also, this maybe not relevant.) For both Windows 7 and Windows 10 guests after a couple (1 to 3) of minutes the mouse partially ceases working. The mouse cursor still moves but no click event occurs on any place of the screen. I can just shutdown by keyboard the guest OS, then I get back my mouse working. Moreover in this situation if I switch to the Ubuntu host mouse keeps not working as if it were captured definitely by the guest OS not working state.

I am using Logiech M325 wireless mouse with Logitech Unifying adapter (which is handling my Logitech K750 wireless solar keyboard also, no problem here). I did replace the batteries, but still no luck. Until I shutdown the Windows guest mouse click does not work.

I did install Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop on a guest for testing the mouse behavior and found no problem. So the issue seems to be specifiy to Windows guests.*

Any suggestion would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
helasz

* after about 40 minutes on Ubuntu guest the mouse produced the same issue. So it is NOT Windows specific afterall.

Can you simplify your setup? One monitor only, even for the host. Find a 3 € mouse, corded, classic USB 3-button one. OK, maybe not that cheap, knock off, but something reliable and sturdy. See if you can replicate the problems.

Start simple and work your way up to more complex setups. No builder started by building the Acropolis. ;)

Same issue, centos 7 as guest, win10 as host, vbox 5.1.28 r117968, 2 virtual screens. Mouse pointer still moving but mouse clicks don't go through.

Managed to restore the mouse clicks without restarting the guest by killing processes on the guest started with the following command line: "/usr/bin/VBoxClient --draganddrop" (which can be done in this situation by switching to a console with ctrl+alt+f2 and coming back with ctrl+alt+f1).

This probably breaks drag and drop between the host and the guest, but I don't use that feature so at least that's a viable workaround. I guess I could just disable this drag and drop feature in the vbox settings. Perhaps this is already fixed, will upgrade vbox and see.

Mouse clicks unresponsive on host and guest after updating system

Post by yoloClin »

Using a Windows 10 VM, clicking can result in the mouse clicks not being registered by host or guest - this only occurs occasionally but I'm unable to reproduce effectively and has only begun occurring after updating my system.

Mouse integration is enabled, pressing the host key does not fix the issue. If I switch to another virtual desktop on my host, the mouse becomes responsive in both the host and guest.

I'm using Gentoo w/ Virtualbox 5.1.36.122089 and guest modules 5.1.36, with OpenBox 3.6.1. This issue is occurring on multiple VMs (Windows 10 and Server 2016) all of which use Guest Additions 5.1.36.122089. VM and Xorg logs are below though they don't contain any information to indicate the cause.

I got the simplified setup: Lubuntu 18.04 Host, Windows 7 guest, wired usb mouse.
After a while clicks are not captured by the guest but hitting CTRL-F the guest window recaptures the clicks again.

What detected using xwininfo is:
- while clicks are captured, xwininfo shows : Window id: 0x3e0000d
- when clicks are not captured and after hitting CTRL-F, xwininfo shows : Window id: 0x3e06c8e

This behaviour is frequent, I mean in every 1-5 minutes it occurs and I need to hit CTRL-F.

The installed Virtualbox is up to date: Version 5.2.12 r122591 (Qt5.9.5)

I did some topic and post merging, because I'm starting to see a pattern here...

@yoloClin
I merged your post with the post by 'helasz'.

@purplefriction
I split your post from the thread "Mouse click lost after a while" because that was a 1+ year old thread, and it seemed to me that your report should be together with the rest of the recent reports.

@lukovszkil
You just happened to "wake" the original thread by 'helasz', you "landed" perfectly... ;)

Potentially related (although I have my doubts): viewtopic.php?f=7&t=88158 and it's accompanying ticket #17791: Guest VM becomes unresponsive after 2 or 3 days continuous uptime

Has there been any update on this? I've upgraded to VirtualBox 5.2.12.122591 and I'm still seeing the same issue on freshly built Windows hosts with 5.2.12 guest additions.

Hello friends,

after I've expected the same problem, I've tried a lot of settings and got the following conclusion:
it seems the problem is with the Drag&Drop function, which I'm not interested in anyways. So try to uncheck Drag&Drop on your VM and start it up.

My problem is solved on Fedora 28 Workstation.

Cheers,
Mark G.

Hi there,
thanks for the hint Mark.
This was getting annoying :)
I disabled drag&drop and now it works flawlessly since 2h.

Side info:
Linux Mint 18.3 (Ubuntu 16.04) host
Windows 10 64bit guest
Guest + Host with 2 Monitors
2d and 3d acceleration enabled
VB and GA Version 5.2.12
Mouse cursor freezed every 10-20 mins.
Logitech M185 wireless mouse
Had to CTRL+ALT+F1 to console and ALT+F7 back into X11 to get it working again

This Drag&Drop setting change doesn't work on 18.04 Ubuntu host.

I had disabled Drag&Drop setting and I still experienced the mouse click catch issue.
However I have tried the opposit setting just to move the setting and that is not a solution for me.

Disabling Drag & Drop does not fix the issue for me either :(

Can confirm same issue here, even with D&D disabled. Lubuntu bionic, Intel graphics.

Falling my host back to 16.04.5 solves the problem. Thats odd...

Same issue here.

Virtual Box: 5.2.10_Ubuntu r121806
Lubuntu 18.04.1
Drag'n'Drop: Disabled

Mouse clicking is lost in host and guest several times a day, for unknown reasons. If I shut down the guest, mouse clicks return.

The status bar indicates that the mouse is captured.

The following sequence has triggered the problem a couple times, but not reliably:

1. Start win8.1x64 guest.
2. Wait for notification that guest additions can be updated (from 5.1.26 to 5.2.10).
3. Try clicking in the guest when the desktop notification occurs.
4. Mouse clicking no longer works until the guest is stopped.

Attaching VBox.log.

@plujon
I told you over at the IRC that only the official VirtualBox is supported. But... since all the other users are seeing the same issue, I think it goes beyond the official/fork barriers. Still, I'd like to see that you are using the official VirtualBox.

I am still not convinced that there's nothing wrong with Ubuntu 18.04 and that this is solely a VirtualBox issue. There have been too many issues, both as a host and as a guest to consider it a coincidence.
