Ubuntu 16.04 bridged WiFi network doesn't work with Win10

Post by aruzsi »

Hi,

Host: Ubuntu 16.04.4 64bit
Guest: Win10 64bit
Bridged network with Intel WiFi.
VBox: 5.2.8 r121009

After boot:
In Win10 there aren't any packet received and the IP is link local (IPV4) 169.254.160.x
Of course no IP from the DHCP server.
NAT is working.

If I give static IP for Win10:
I can ping the host and guest each other but not any other hosts on the same subnetwork.
On the linux side I can see "ARP, Request who-has <dest-IP> tell <Win10-IP>, lenght 28" by tcpdump (wlp1s0)
I can see some multicast IGMP v2 packets to 224.0.0.252, too.

Firewall is disabled on Linux and firewall on Win10 is on default state.

Checking incoming traffic on an other host which is connected to the same subnet nothing arrives from the Win10 guest. :-(

TIA,
Ruzsi

Hi,

I did a test with wired Ethernet port.
It works without any problem.

Interesting ...
VMware Player works with WiFi on the same running environment.

TIA,

Bridging to WiFi may or may not work depending on your combination of WiFi adapter, access points, router, weather, day of the week*

As you will see posted around these forums, bridging isn't part of the WiFi spec so if it works then "yay", if not then changing your adapter or router (if possible) may fix it. Reports from others can be found in Bridging & Wifi - Supported hardware.

In my case, my old Windows laptop using an Intel Centrino N1030 WiFi adapter has always worked without any problems to my home network, my 2017 iMAC just doesn't!

Please don't ask me to do your homework for you, I have more than enough of my own things to do.

OK, I understand. May or may not ...

But! The same hardware, same host OS, same guest OS (except the VM addons!) and VirtualBox doesn't work and VMware works. They are hypervisors.
What is your opinion? Vmware knows more about this Intel WiFi chipset or Oracle?
I don't want to distro war. I just want - would like - working bridged networking.

TIA,
Ruzsi
