debian sid - What does 98vboxadd-xclient do?

Postby milomak » 18. Nov 2017, 23:51

This causes VBoxClient: the VirtualBox kernel service is not running. Exiting. when booting in Debian

That being a result of
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
if ! test -c /dev/vboxguest 2>/dev/null; then
   # Do not start if the kernel module is not present.
notify-send "VBoxClient: the VirtualBox kernel service is not running.  Exiting."

which makes sense when my install has
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
# ls -lah /dev/vbox*
crw------- 1 root root      10, 56 Nov 18 23:30 /dev/vboxdrv
crw------- 1 root root      10, 55 Nov 18 23:30 /dev/vboxdrvu
crw------- 1 root root      10, 54 Nov 18 23:30 /dev/vboxnetctl

/dev/vboxusb:
total 0
drwxr-x---  3 root vboxusers   60 Nov 18 23:29 .
drwxr-xr-x 21 root root      3.4K Nov 18 23:30 ..
drwxr-x---  2 root vboxusers   80 Nov 18 23:29 001

My installed packages are
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
# dpkg -l | grep virtualbox

I'm not seeing the package referenced in the topic title. I'd be surprised if I did on two counts, (1) there are no VBoxAdditions for Win98, and (2) what would those be doing on a Debian host anyway?
