I am a little confused,
I thought i was using the latest version, but it seems i am using an old version,
My linux mint software has never told me their was a newer version, but then i look on the website and their is a newer version then the one i am using
I am using v5.0.40_Ubuntur115130 with guest additions
on a linux mint xfce system
how can i upgrade to the latest version, & is it worth upgrading to the newest one?
[Solved] how to upgrade/am i on the latest release? linux

You are using the distro version (fork) and they do not update usually. If you want the latest and greatest you need to remove theirs and install the official version from virtualbox.org

You shouldn't need to worry about the guests. They should make the transition just fine, but I always say you need a good backup for anything that you feel is important.
Re: how to upgrade/am i on the latest release? linux
it didnt work! i uninstalled and installed the new one,
but when i power on the virtual machine i get this message:
RTR3InitEx failed with rc=-1912 (rc=-1912)
The VirtualBox kernel modules do not match this version of VirtualBox. The installation of VirtualBox was apparently not successful. Executing
'/sbin/vboxconfig'
may correct this. Make sure that you do not mix the OSE version and the PUEL version of VirtualBox.
where: supR3HardenedMainInitRuntime what: 4 VERR_VM_DRIVER_VERSION_MISMATCH (-1912) - The installed support driver doesn't match the version of the user.

Re: how to upgrade/am i on the latest release? linux
That means that you have not totally removed the the previous ( OSE fork ) you must make sure it is completely removed before you install the official version. I would suggest you use dpkg to install.
