New installation for oldish Virtual Disk (VDI)

Post by robbyx »

I have just installed the latest version of VB. Upon opening the oldish Winxp VDI I get the following error messages:
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine R-winxp-vb.

The virtual machine 'R-winxp-vb' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1).

Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: MachineWrap
Interface: IMachine {b2547866-a0a1-4391-8b86-6952d82efaa0}
I also see another VB error- Error in supR3HrdenedMaininitRu....
/bin/vboxconfig resulted in a report that the fvboxconfig file does not exist
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine R-winxp-vb.

The virtual machine 'R-winxp-vb' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1).

I wonder if previously I had been running VB as 386. The one I have just installed is AMD64. Will this problem go away if I completely remove the installed version and then install the 386 version?

First you need to remove the Ubuntu version and install the official version if you want help here. After that you need to make sure that you remove the Extension pack that you have now and install the one that matches your running version of VirtualBox. You can see these errors in the log you posted. If you still have an issue after you change to the official version, post a new log file.

Note: you can keep your Ubuntu install but you will need to ask them for help.

I have uninstalled VB 5.1.26 via synaptic.

Should I be concerned about the existence of the files listed in the attached. Locate virtualbox was run after removing VB?

Whilst awaiting a reply I went ahead and reinstalled the VB from the Oracle site. I now have it working although why Is unclear. I had not installed VB or the ext-pack from the Ubuntu repositories!

As ever, thanks

The log you had posted showed that you had. Look at the log and you will see ubuntu and (OSE). Then look at the installed extension pack which has VNC instead of vRDP. The VNC extension pack was designed for the distros to build and make available. I suspect you installed via the ubuntu software center which IMHO is a piece of junk. It will trick you into installing their version which is a fork.

I am surprised that I got the files from different sources, but having reinstalled both I now have VB working again. Thank you.
