How to scan with the scanner Canon DR F-120?

Post by Namenick »

Hi, I installed Virtualbox in Debian 8, I activated the USB port of the Canon DR F-120 scanner for the virtual machine after installing it (setup.exe) and, when I start the scanner application does not let me Update or access Properties, just close it. How to scan with the scanner Canon DR F-120?

Please read the following thread: USB basics and troubleshooting, all of the posts. If you still have a problem after reading through the whole thing, please follow the advice of the last post.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

  1. It looks like you're using the distro's fork version of VirtualBox. You can either ask in their forums for help, or completely remove/uninstall/delete/purge their version and install the official version from the Downloads section of VirtualBox (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads).

  2. This is a quite old version. When you download the official version, try the latest, 5.1.26 as of this writing.
  3. Delete all the values in the filter except Name, Vendor ID, ProductID, as per the instruction articles that I linked to.

I have installed the last Virtualbox version

Code: Select all

dpkg -i virtualbox-5.1_5.1.26-117224~Debian~jessie_amd64.deb

Code: Select all

apt-get -f install
and when I start it and I try running the virtual machine after set it up, it fails. I deleted the virtual machine and I tried to create it again, and it's imposible to create it again:
Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908) (...)

There is more than that to the error. You should post the complete error messages, not parts of them...
Could you post your /var/log/vbox-install.log?

You need the developer utilities. Read Ch. 4.2.2. Guest Additions for Linux. I don't know the install/update mechanism for Debian, but I believe it's 'apt-get', so, issue the command:

Code: Select all

apt-get install gcc binutils kernel-headers-$(uname -r) kernel-devel-$(uname -r) make bzip2 perl
Or you could use Synaptic if you have that installed.

Actually all that Debian based OSes require is linux-headers and build-essential
Example:

Code: Select all

sudo or su apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r) build-esential

Perryg, do you have a list of the required packages per distro, at least for the major ones? And their preferred update mechanism? I know there's 'yum', 'dnf', 'apt-get', 'pacman' (and I'm probably missing a few), but I still have to search for it every time, because I keep forgetting which one is which...

I really love standardization :? ...

Linux as such is standard. The different distros decided to make theirs unique by using different package managers for reasons that are beyond me, but that is the way it is. Funny thing is you can actually install your favorite apt-get, rpm, Etc manually and get basically the same results in almost all Linux distros if you want to go to the hassle. As for the requirements I usually remember because I test a lot of various distros and prefer to use the command line instead of the fancy software center, synaptic, aptitude, zypper, Etc. The major releases can be found in the Linux guest tutorial section and is fairly accurate though. viewtopic.php?f=29&t=15679

Hi, Just want to say thanks to socratis for your USB basics and troubleshooting post (commenting here b/c comments closed there). The following from your post was all that I needed:

NOTE for Linux hosts
For Linux hosts, please make sure that you are a part of the "vboxusers" group and verify your membership with the "id" command, after a logout or a reboot. Otherwise you will not see any USB devices. Also remember that only the official download from VirtualBox is supported, not your distro's.

I could then see my scanner and install the windows software that came with it on my setup (Ubuntu 18.04.4 lts host; win 8.1 guest; vbox 6.1.2 r135662 (Qt5.9.5);kodak scanmate i940).
