VM has network connectivity issues

Post by jj007 »

Hi All,
I have a virtual machine Virtual Box instance, which runs fine on one machine. I export and import the appliance onto a new machine. It starts up fine but does not connect the web server contained in the VM to the database running locally in the VM. Keep throwing some network connectivity issue. Not sure how to debug this. Also, I was thinking a VM should always be machine agnostic, right. What would be happening here and how to resolve it.

Thanks

I was thinking a VM should always be machine agnostic,
VM maybe, but OS not so much. It depends on the OS and the network settings or lack thereof, and the type of adapter selected. It can also depend on what the "database" is expecting to see. So far all I can tell is it does not work, but if you want to provide some diagnostic information there maybe a reason and therefore a fix.

Minimal information needed to be able to help

The VM gets a new MAC address if you export/import as OVA appiiance. Many Linux distributions lock the IP config to the MAC address, so you would need make sure that your installation doesn't do "persistent network rules" and/or links to the HWADDR in the config files.
The easiest way to avoid these "problems" would be to just copy the whole VM folder to the new system as described in the FAQ Moving a VM

Hi Martin,
I check the MAC address of the imported appliance, seems to be the same as the original exported one.

Please advise.

Hi Perry
The version of VirtualBox you are using, and whether you have installed the Guest Additions (in the guest).
>> VirtualBOx version is 5.2.0, guest additions has been installed
Host & Guest make and version including 32 or 64 bit, and the amount of memory available to both.
>> Host: Windows 10 - 64 bit, Guest is Oracle Linux Server release 7.4. Amount of Memory available, Host:8GB, Guest 8GB
VM log file (as an attachment) See your VirtualBox users guide for how to locate this if using CLI or right click the guest in the VirtualBox main manager and select show log. Then choose save.
*Note: Windows as host users with version newer than 4.3.12 need to post the VBoxStartup.log or VBoxHardening.log
>> Attached VBoxStartup.log

Thanks

The guest is set to use the internal network adapter so it will not see any other machine that is not on the same IntNet circuit. Not knowing exactly where the web server is located or how it is configured this might be your issue. I am also concerned that the version of VirtualBox is too old for a red hat OS that new. you might need to update to the latest 5.2.2. This is because of newer kernels not building the VBox external modules properly and has been addressed in newer builds.

I see you actually have another topic related to something resembling this but with a slightly different twist. In it you say that you have a working guest but the guest you exported off of it has the same issue. I would compare all the settings for the working guest to the one that does not work. Something must be different and also keep in mind that if you intend to run both guests at the same time the Mac addresses must not be the same or both will loose network abilities.

Hi Perry,
1)The guest is set to use the internal network adapter so it will not see any other machine that is not on the same IntNet circuit
>> In the VirtualBox Manager Network Adapter 1 setting, I have NAT previously Bridged, so how do you say it's internal network

2) Not knowing exactly where the web server is located or how it is configured this might be your issue.
>> How to find out

3) I am also concerned that the version of VirtualBox is too old for a red hat OS that new. you might need to update to the latest 5.2.2. This is because of newer kernels not building the VBox external modules properly and has been addressed in newer builds.
>> Also ran the new guest additions 5.2.2. Uncompressing VirtualBox 5.2.2 Guest Additions for Linux........
VirtualBox Guest Additions installer
Removing installed version 5.2.2 of VirtualBox Guest Additions...
Copying additional installer modules ...
Installing additional modules ...
VirtualBox Guest Additions: Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules.
VirtualBox Guest Additions: Running kernel modules will not be replaced until the system is restarted
VirtualBox Guest Additions: Starting.
Press Return to close this window...

and did a restart

4) both guests at the same time the Mac addresses must not be the same or both will loose network abilities
>> I do not run both the guests at the same time.

5) Also Firefox takes so long to start up, so much trouble with Virtualbox.

Thanks

This is what the log shows.

Code: Select all

00:00:01.576379 [/Devices/e1000/0/LUN#0/] (level 4)
00:00:01.576379 Driver <string> = "IntNet" (cb=7)
From the hosts terminal type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use " " if the name has a space in it.

From your posted log file:
00:00:01.576377 MAC <bytes> = "08 00 27 64 6b 90" (cb=6)
00:00:01.793999 E1000#0 Chip=82540EM LinkUpDelay=3000ms EthernetCRC=on GSO=enabled Itr=disabled ItrRx=enabled TID=disabled R0=enabled GC=enabled
00:00:01.794122 IntNet#0: szNetwork={HostInterfaceNetworking-Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165} enmTrunkType=3 szTrunk={\DEVICE\{2C160DCE-E662-43D6-A10F-45F06CEF2C11}}
From your posted showinfo:
NIC 1: MAC: 080027762B61, Attachment: NAT, Cable connected: on, Trace: off (file: none), Type: 82540EM, Reported speed: 0 Mbps, Boot priority: 0, Promisc Policy: deny, Bandwidth group: none
NIC 1 Settings: MTU: 0, Socket (send: 64, receive: 64), TCP Window (send:64, receive: 64)
As you can see they don't match. There is something really wrong and I have never seen this before. Your settings ( configurations file ) is being ignored for some reason or this log file is not from the same machine that the showinfo file is from.

With the showvminfo, I changed some configuration while attempting to get the internet connectivity.

1) Reinitialized the MAC address and changed network setting to NAT from bridged.

Cannot seems to get it working and fast running short of ideas.

How do I test all the network configuration is correct and no firewalls deny the connectivity.

Did you manually try to change this? If so then you probably should make sure the guest is shut down ( not saved state ) and use the main manager to verify that the settings are as they should be. Then shut down the main manager, wait at least 20 seconds and start it again. Then look at the settings to make sure it took. If so then start the guest see if it work, and if not post the new log file as an attachment.

Note: you should have seen the header notice below telling you to not manually edit the file ( if that is what you did )

Code: Select all

<!--
** DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE.
** If you make changes to this file while any VirtualBox related application
** is running, your changes will be overwritten later, without taking effect.
** Use VBoxManage or the VirtualBox Manager GUI to make changes.

Hi Perry,
I have not manually edited the file. I made the configuration changes through the VM manager.

Thanks
