Linux guests abort on vbox 5.1.24 on Ubuntu 16.04

Post by MarkClancy »

I had everything working on 5.1.22 and then updated to .24 and now none of my Linux guests live long enough to be useful. I removed and update the extension pack but that made no difference. I start the vm from the command line in headless mode and the guest with the attached log boots, starts the UI, and I connected to it via RDP. I get the sign on screen and then RDP disconnects. The log seems to complain about some audio stuff, but does not show the system aborting. if I do showvminfo I see the "State: aborted (since 2017-07-21T21:04:46.000000000)". Lastly I had been using remotebox to mange VMS and this was working fine with 5.1.22, but now with valid credentials it throws PAM errors in auth.log saying the user is unknown. This might be a vboxwebsrv problem as that thing is a bit touchy, but let me add it to the list as someone else is also having an issue.

Thanks for taking a look at this for me.

I am having the same issue. Upgraded to the new version and updated the extension pack.

However for me it is only happening for Ubuntu 16.04 Desktop guests (that worked perfectly fine on 5.1.22). Ubuntu 16.04 Server guests are starting ok.

I created a new guest with the same setup to try and help debug more and it just dies before you get to the setup dialogs in the boot menu. Having issues with the forum and am unable to post the log.

This definitely looks like an issue with 5.1.24.

I downgraded to 5.1.22 from the downloads page (ext pack too) and the Ubuntu Desktop guest starts fine.

Uninstalled 5.1.22 and downloaded 5.1.24 from the official page and installed it with dpkg. Replaced the ext pack with the 5.1.24 one. The Ubuntu Desktop guest will not start.
