File Menu missing from VBox App (not guest)

Post by Stevod »

I have installed Virtualbox 5.1 on Ubuntu Mate, and I need to import an appliance. However, the entire menu bar (File> Machine> etc) is missing from the application, as shown in attached pic. How can I show it?

Thanks,
Stevod

Look at the top of the ubuntu itself. Ubuntu moved all title bar fields there. Depending on the version of your host there is a way to move them back.

Thanks for helping, PerryG. I saw the recommendations to look at the top of the screen elsewhere in the forum, but there's nothing there - see attached screen shot. Any ideas?

What is the exact version of the host?

Oh, and I need one more piece to the puzzle:
Post the guests log file ( as an attachment ). Right click on the guest in the Main Manager then click show log. Save and post as an attachment. Compress if it is too large to post.

It's on Ubuntu 16.10, and the same problem occurs on Unity.

Log file attached for the guest.

Thanks,

I am having issues myself with 16.10 although it is systemd so it may be a bit before I can test this. In the mean time post the ~/.config/VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml file as an attachment. Compress it or change the extension to txt to get it past the upload filter.

Will post the xml file shortly. Is 16.04 proven OK though, if I re-image to that?

Thanks.

My issues with 16.10 probably have nothing to do with VirtualBox. I work with various Linux distros and sometimes I break them during my trials. Let's stick with what you have. It should work but I need to find out where the real problem is.

OK, XML file attached - I'll look forward any guidance you can give.

Thanks.

Thank you. Looks like it is not VirtualBox that is disabeling the menu in the app menu section. So that puts it back to the OS. I know it can be placed in the proper location with Ubuntu and it follows along with other DT like cinnamon and mate. So the question is does this install have the default ubuntu DT to log into? If not you might get a faster answer to this from the ubuntu mate folks since I have to re-install to be able to get you a hard answer here. I am really behind so it may be at least a few days.

Hi Perryg, thanks very much for your help here, but you know that sometimes in IT you spend ages trying to sort something, then...it sorts itself. That's happened here - the menu has appeared for no reason. Go Figure.

Hopefully it will be permanent.

Many thanks again.

I still have this problem along with some ugly colors and unreadable fonts. Again this is the Virtualbox Manager window not any guest OSes window. I'm running Ubuntu 21.04 and I run gnome-flashback with compiz. The menubar used to be at the top of the VirtualBox Manager window but has disappeared. Probably with the update from 20.04 -> 21.04.

Here's how VirtualBox Manager appears to me:

Please don't necro-post. Start your own topic and also provide a VM log file from any recently run VM. I appreciate that you are discussing the manager, but the log will answer a lot of questions you did not, like what version of VirtualBox you use.
