VirtualBox on a Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV) Host

Post by ScubaPlanet »

we have installed the VirtualBox (last rev.) in as a "Red Hat 7 Guest-System" on a "Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV) Host".

Sounds strange, but we like to do some education to our trainees and did not have a physical Server left :-(

If we start die Virtual-Box-Guest (after an importe), the Virtual-Box-Guest (even Red Hat 7), give us this error:

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine CentOS-7 (srv012024).
VT-x is not available (VERR_VMX_NO_VMX).
Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: ConsoleWrap
Interface: IConsole {872da645-4a9b-1727-bee2-5585105b9eed}

Is there a way to drive VirtualBox in a RHEV Environment?
Our RHEV-Team has no intention.

Thanks for help.

Virtualbox relies on hardware virtualisation, nested virtualisation / running in a virtualized host is not supported.
It may work (slowly) when you restrict it to just 32bit guests, single vCPU, less than 4G RAM per guest and no newer Windows versions than 7.

Hello Marin
in VirtualBox (and VMWARE) you can provide "VT-x/AMD-V" Flag to the Guest inside VirtualBox.
In my case I need to enable "VT-x/AMD-V" Flag at the RHEV to provide "VT-x/AMD-V" Flag to the RHEV-Guest (VirtualBox).
The performance is not importend for me. More importen is to start the VirtualBox in the RHEV Client.
Did some one use this combination and has a hint where to enable "VT-x/AMD-V" in RHEV for the Guests?

In Virtualbox this setting is for "use VT-x to improve performance for this guest".
For this VT-x needs to be available on the "host", which I don't know if RHEV can provide this.
Virtualbox doesn't provide VT-x inside a guest.
