[Solved] USB thumb drive does not show on Windows guest

Post by HockeyBum27 »

I am able to connect to the USB thumb drive in my Windows 7 guest, but it does not show as a drive in the guest (e.g., not in 'my computer', etc.). I've tried scanning for hardware changes in guest, nothing comes up (see attached screenshot).

INFO:
VBox 5.0.30r112061
Ext pack: 5.0.3r112061
Host:Ubuntu 14.04 (64-bit)
Guest: Windows 7 (32-bit)

I have GA installed and up-to-date.

I followed through the instructions/suggestions on this link: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=80129, but to no avail. My problem as I see it is a bit different than the one reported there, however, as I'm able to CONNECT to the device, it just doesn't show in the OS. I've also added my userid to the vboxusers group, and logged out/logged back in.

Below is the output of the various commands that were suggested in the above link, and I'm attaching a screenshot showing that I'm connected to the USB device, but it's not showing in my guest OS.

Why not simply access the drive as a shared folder? You will have to disable the USB filter first: the drive can't be shared by the host and grabbed by the guests virtual USB controller.

@mpack - thanks for the quick response and suggestion!

To answer your question: I'm trying to use it as a thumbdrive for creating and testing bootable USB drives using YUMI. So a share won't work. The app looks for removable media to format and put syslinux and ISOs on and such.

Post the guests log file ( as an attachment ). Right click on the guest in the Main Manager then click show log. Save and post as an attachment. Compress if it is too large to post.

Did you check in the Windows disk management? Maybe it just doesn't have a drive letter assigned.

Did you install the xHCI drivers for Windows? It does not have them by default.

Great but did you install the xHCI driver in the Windows 7 guest? Since you have enabled xHCI you must install that driver.

Perry,

I did not intentionally enable that. I'll try disabling that and go from there. Will let you know.

PerryG,

That was it! I changed the setting to USB 2.0 (rather than installing the xHCI driver at this time). Not sure that I need USB 3.0 for what I'm doing so 2.0 will probably be fine.

Thanks for the QUICK, HELPFUL replies!

PS - what is the best way to mark this solved - just change the title?
