[Solved] .vbox missing but snapshots available

Post by franz_02_72 »

Hi, all. I have a big problem... Accidentally deleted my ".vbox" file (together with its "vbox-prev" copy) and want to recover my VM using snapshots. Is it possible?
It happened because the disk went full, so description files I mentioned became corrupted!

Thanks

Not a problem, I'm sure you have a semi recent backup of this data available, right?

The base VDI was in the same folder as the .vbox files. Did you delete the base VDI too?

If yes, then with no backup the VM is dead and gone.

If not, put the snapshot VDIs in the same folder as the base VDI and clone the most recent snapshot (NOT the base VDI), using CloneVDI. Create a new VM around the clone VDI which it creates.

I've never had a ".vdi" in the same folder as the ".vbox" file... I configured my VM to point to different partitions, for main .vdi file and snapshots ones.
Is that a problem or I can proceed following your suggestions?
I'm on Ubuntu host: how can I use your CloneDVI tool?

Thanks!

Moved to "Linux Hosts".

The location of the main VDI doesn't change my instructions. The only requirement is that you do have the main VDI.

You can either run CloneVDI on a Windows host, or it will also run happily under Wine.

It would be nice to confirm details. E.g. how did you choose to run CloneVDI in the end?

I copied all my files to a Windows machine, then used your cloning tool, then come back to Linux.

Ah, ok. I was hoping for confirmation that it still runs under Wine. Oh well.

Don, if you don't have a Linux VM ready to try it, I have several ones: Mint17, Ubuntu 12.04, Fedora 20 and Arch Manjaro 16-something. And of course OSX 10.x, where 4 < x < 13. Let me know if you need confirmation that CloneVDI works under Wine.

Thanks Socratis, but that isn't really what I'm after. I have "feelers" out to warn me about any problems that arise, I don't want to be constantly testing wersion x of guest os y unless I sense a problem. So each confirmation that it still works in current real world scenarios is useful to me.
