There is NO sound after update from VirtualBox 5.1.2, Hosts and Guests are different

Post by macachuto »

Hello

Today I decided to update VirtualBox 5.1.2 to VirtualBox 5.1.4 and sound has gone for Linux guests.

I have 3 guest: windows xp, ubuntu 12.04 and ubuntu 16.04

Sound exists only in windows guest, ubuntu 12.04 and ubuntu 16.04 doesn't have sound.
ubuntu 12.04 uses alsa without any mixer
ubuntu 16.04 uses pulse

Host sound settings equal for all of guests: Alsa Audio Driver + ICH AS97.

Please, your suggestions.
Thank you in advance

Switch the Linux guests to use the Intel HD audio and see if that works.

After changing settings to Intel HD audio and back to ICH AS97 I got sound

But it unusable, it has delay about 2 second and video is slowdown at the beginning. When I stop SMplayer sound still goes for about 2 second.

Result - sound awful

I am going to downgrade to 5.1.2.

Reverted to VirtualBox 5.1.2 -> sound is good, there is no any big delays. Pulse works as usual like a shit, but it is acceptable for virtual guest.
If I ever install 16.04 to a box, I change it to Alsa.

Will stay on VirtualBox 5.1.2 few releases.
Will fill a bug about it.

I've been running VirtualBox 5.1.4 and I had sound in my Ubuntu 12.04 box until I applied some updates last night, one of which was a kernel update. I tried switching to Intel HDA, but I still did not have sound (I didn't expect it to work since it never worked for me before). I switched back to AC97, but I still don't have sound. I rebooted it just now and find these errors in the syslog during startup:

Downgrading to 5.1.2 fixed the sound problem for me as well (Debian stretch 4.6.0 kernel).

I reverted back to 5.1.2 and my sound returned, and those errors in my above post are not in my syslog anymore.

I did not save 5.1.4 Vbox.log file, so I can not attach it to my bug: https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/15859

If anyone has 5.1.4 Vbox.log please, attach it here or to my bug about this problem.

Thank you in advance.

@macachuto

Please try the latest 5.1 build from the Testbuilds page.

Scroll down to the '''Latest test builds / 5.1.x builds''' section and download the build appropriate for your host platform.

Could you please supply the verbose VBox.log file as shown here: [wiki:AudioDebug Investigating audio problems]

Thank you!

@pentagonik

Thank you for the interesting suggestion.
I have checked those file and it is an executable script, that will do "something" with my personal system.
Sorry, but I am unable to install packages in such way.

If you want me to test, it is supposed to be a regular installation package which I should be able to remove later.
I do not want to make a mess of my system.

Thank you

New version VirtualBox 5.1.6 is available.

Please, if some of you have checked it already and do not have any problem with audio, share your host and guest settings (SW/HW) here.

Thank you in advance.

Confirm === sound DOESN'T work in VirtualBox 5.1.6
Completely the same as it was in VirtualBox 5.1.4

My log file is attached.

I too still do not have sound with 5.1.6. Reverting to 5.1.2 restores sound.

I just noticed this is the Linux Hosts forum, but my host OS is Windows 10. This was the only post I found when I searched for the problem after upgrading to 5.1.4. Should I start a new topic in the Windows Hosts forum, or does it matter since there are already bug tickets for the problem from both OSes?
