Kali guest additions installation problem

I know this is a common problem, but I haven't found any valid solution online. Virtualbox guest additions won't install in my Kali machine. This is the log in /var/log/vbox-install.log: "Makefile:181: *** Error: unable to find the sources of your current Linux kernel. Specify KERN_DIR=<directory> and run Make again. Stop.". Any reply will be greatly appreciated!
I almost forgot to mention that dkms is in fact installed

You need to install the kernel-headers that match your running kernel.
You may also need to install build-essential.

how do I do those two things?

actually I did both
apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)
and
apt-get install build-essential
no changes, it still won't install guest additions

What version of the Guest Addition pack are you trying to install on kali ?
Also what version of Virtualbox are you running on host ?

(I, myself, wonder what is the latest supported version of Guest Addition Pack for Kali on Vbox 5.1.2)

sorry guys. Not very proficient in Linux yet. Yet. lotta work. Anyway, I think they installed correctly. No errors this time. I went back and ran this command as suggested. Thank you.

apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)

When I ran the script, no error messages this time.

As per Kali's own instruction (http://docs.kali.org/general-use/kali-l ... -box-guest), vbox 4.2.xx and higher have new cmd for this process..
we shouldn't play with the header, nor manually insert the guess addition anymore. read that page.
