Stripe windows bug remains in 5.0.24

Post by SpahZ »

So, linux people are still running 4.3.x to avoid the stripe window bug introduced
post-5.0.2 . . the guest window slit /stripe window geometry bug

. . locking up the discussion didn't make it go away . . . .
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=74683&hilit=stripe+window
. . . Yup , , still broken . . . . . backing off to 5.0.2 or earlier, or 4.3.x still fixes it . .

I re-read the whole thread that you're quoting. You know what's missing from the 20+ posts in there (as well as yours here)? Diagnostics and logs! Me too is not really that much helpful. So, please do the following:
  • Launch the VM with the 4.3.x version that doesn't exhibit the problem for you (don't assume that a lot of people are seeing this; it's not that widespread).
  • Shut it down and get the "VBox.log" file. Grab the "<VM>.vbox" file as well. ZIP them.
  • Upgrade to the latest VirtualBox (5.0.24 as of this writing).
  • Repeat the procedure; launch VM, shut down VM, grab "VBox.log" and "<VM>.vbox", zip them.
  • Post the two zip files.
  • Locate your VirtualBox.xml file and post that as well.
Something in there should lead us to what might be wrong.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

So first a version that works , , , ( 5.0.2 and earlier is free of this bug )
Empty VM . . because the Guest OS is irrelevant . . .

root@a64:/home/data3/vbox.dsk3/Machines# tar cvf 4.3.38.test.tar.gz test
test/
test/test.vbox-prev
test/Logs/
test/Logs/VBox.log
test/test.vbox

Still waiting for 5.1.0 DL to complete (my inet con is slow) . . so here is something post vbox 5.0.2
. . 5.0.24 . . install .. install matching extension

root@a64:/home/data1/vbox.dsk/VirtualBox# killall VBoxSVC vboxwebsrv VBoxXPCOMIPCD
root@a64:/home/data1/vbox.dsk/VirtualBox# VirtualBox-5.0.24-108355-Linux_amd64.run
root@a64:/home/data1/vbox.dsk/VirtualBox# virtualbox

Run the same empty test VM and here is the slit window . . . . run a winblows VM
in it, and it can dork it totally with bogus monsize GEO numbers, can dork it so bad its unrecoverable
. . so better save a snapshot first !

Next comes 5.1.0 . . after it gets here . . . and the VirtualBox.xml . .

2016-07-20 23:33:31 (10.7 KB/s) - 'VirtualBox-5.1.0-108711-Linux_amd64.run' saved [85523910/85523910]
root@a64:/home/data1/vbox.dsk/VirtualBox# chmod +x VirtualBox-5.1.0-108711-Linux_amd64.run
root@a64:/home/data1/vbox.dsk/VirtualBox# VirtualBox-5.1.0-108711-Linux_amd64.run
root@a64:/home/data1/vbox.dsk/VirtualBox# virtualbox

. . install ext pack yadda yadda . . . .
afu@a64:~$ virtualbox

Same slit window . . ( if the VM isnt empty, it gets even worse, the bogus window Geometry will have
wierd SPAM_SEARCH with the GUI )

It says my xml dir tarball is too big to post @470k . . heh , , , thats funny

Same issue here . . one and the same problem

Auto-resize snaps back to first physical monitor
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=74790

. . 4.3.38 . . . anything 5.0.2 and earlier . . no slit window bug . .
no window snapping on multi monitor xservers that span 3 or more screen panels . .
no dorking up VM desktop stored window size geometries in the VM gui . . .

All is right again . . but hey . . what could we possibly know eh ?
Cheers.

Desktop geometry bug remains in 5.1.8 and 5.0.28 . . . .

The version that works, 4.3.X is being abandoned . .
"" VirtualBox 4.3.x is no longer supported! ""

root@a64:~# uname -a
Linux a64 4.7.10 #5 SMP Tue Oct 25 01:08:51 CDT 2016 x86_64 AMD Phenom(tm) II X6

4.3.40 will still work up to 4.7.10 Kernel for those with large geometry monitor spanning desktops
but it looks like large linux desktop support is being abandoned.

Bug still present in 5.2.16 ...

VirtualBox switches permanently to a small stripe window
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=74683

Auto-resize snaps back to first physical monitor
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=74790

5.0.2 and earlier works properly,,

"" VirtualBox 4.3.x is no longer supported! ""
The stripe / slit window geometry bug has become permanent, . .
the only version that works with large multiple monitor spanning desktops abandoned.

Anyone willing to help with a patch for 4.3.40 to compile against recent kernels ?

If you have large desktop geometry ( mine is 5760X1080 across 3 monitors )
Its the only solution available since the geoX10 code was dorked post v 5.0.2
Latest kernel the good-working vbox 4.3.40 will compile against is 4.7.10.

Post 5.0.2 slit window bug is still there in 6.1.34 . . . amazing
Wonder how many force-it patches have pasted over that geometry glitch
still in there . . .
Still running 4.3.40 on older kernel,, running newer stuff in containers
to avoid the post 5.0.2 geometry glitch that dorked things in Sep 2015
