Conflict between VB4.3 & 5.0 is Intended - How to Upgrade

Post by hbnmgr »

Originally sent this message;
Have currently VBox v4.3 installed on Ubuntu v14.04
Downloaded VBox v5.014-105127-ubuntu-trusty

Using GDebi Pkg Installer v0.9.5.3 I get a message in the window
Status: ERROR Conflicts with the installed pkg 'virtualbox-4.3'

Any suggestions? I thought I would upgrade before Exporting from
my Desktop to my Laptop. Thanks for any advice and your time!

Regarding your problem: The conflict between the VirtualBox 4.3
package and the VirtualBox 5.0 package is intended. If you use
a package manager like aptitude it will suggest you to remove the
4.3 package before installing the 5.0 package and this is the
correct way to resolve this conflict. No harm will be done to your
virtual machines when you uninstall the VirtualBox 4.3 package.
I have 4.3 running perfectly with lots of data for Trading, including Trading Software that I can't afford to lose!

Question: How do I upgrade without losing all my Data and installed Software? And Do I really need to Upgrade?

I understand uninstalling 4.3 and installing 5.0. But reading other posts ... they've lost all data and files in previous VM.
Logically thinking, I could Export the VM, and after installing v5.0 - IMPORT the previous VM. However, I am unsure if v5.0 will import from an earlier version as the above message proves there is a "conflict" by design, but yet also states - "No harm will be done" !?!?! Confused !!! If it ain't broke - Don't fix it. Why do I need to upgrade?

Thanks!

Upgrading software does not mean you lose your data. What made you think it did? Do your doc files disappear from your office PC when you upgrade Word?

Which posts discuss VMs lost by upgrading? I don't remember that ever happening. Besides, you should be making backups anyway whenever there is the least concern.

In Post 76284 we find;
(NOTE: cannot post URL, "Must be a Member for 1 day and have 1 post"
still shows up - Do see an URL? This is my 2nd day as a member.)
After upgrade on repo and restart VBox Manager all VMs
disappear
I see later he states, it is really there, its just VBox can't see it???

ALSO in this Post; 70037
we find several people lose their VMs, or can't delete them. But upon
upgrade to v5 they lose them.

Upon proof of my post, you still failed to answer my questions? As VBox
Development Mgr said, "the CONFLICT is by Design". So how do we get
around the conflict, and keep our VMs intact after deleting the
currently installed VBox and ReInstalling a newer one?

The first sentence of my previous response answered your question. Was the language unclear? Then let me try again: you do not need to do anything to preserve your VMs because there has never been an occasion when upgrading the software causes you to lose your VMs. Therefore the entire premise of your questions is mistaken.

I fail to see the proof you mention. Referencing uninformed speculation doesn't make it authoritative.

:evil:
You are in ERROR!
Perhaps you FAILED again to READ my message. Let me be clear as to your "uninformed speculation". You asked for a post for reference. I gave you two posts.
I suggest you read this one again.

I understand your assumption - that the VMs are kept in another folder under user. But there is also an assumptions that;
a) the files / VMs will not be removed or not seen by the new install, (for proof see URL above) or
b) there will not be incompatibility problems between version, or
c) that people will know where the files are kept and
d) assuming they know where, that they will also know HOW to point the newly installed version to the old file location,
e) assuming again they didn't change the location in the newer version of the program.

Should I go on with your assumptions? No need to get rude - isn't that against Forum Policy? Your assumptions are predicated on many presumptions - mostly that everyone will know as much as YOU !!! Moreover, My decisions affect 10s of Thousands of dollars each day of trading. I'm not going to risk losing any data on one man's assumptions - especially since ... I DON'T KNOW YOU FROM ADAM, PAL !!! I can ONLY lose a few weeks worth of data, as I always perform FULL METAL Backups. Always Plan before making any changes. And NEVER jump to conclusions based on someone else's assumptions and presumptions. My words of advice for anyone listening to this Moderator from Oracle whose primary OS is WinXP ! ! ! ! :roll:
