Windows-Guest on Linux-Host won't run

Post by trilogik »

Hello!

I've seen several similar posts on the whole internet, but none so far has taken me to success regarding my problem. I installed virtualbox-5.0 accoding to the documentation available at virtualbox.org https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads.

I have a virtual machine, that resides on my headless machine:

Code: Select all

root@computer:/root# ls -l /samba_shares/public/Installation/Oracle_VirtualBox_VMs/Testmachine
insgesamt 28681344
-rwxrwxr-x 1 nobody sambausers 6549 Jan 5 12:01 Testmachine.vbox
-rwxrwxr-x 1 nobody sambausers 6549 Jan 5 12:01 Testmachine.vbox-prev
-rwxrwxr-x 1 nobody sambausers 29369671680 Jan 28 15:28 Testmachine.vdi
drwxrwsr-x 2 nobody sambausers 4096 Jan 5 12:01 Logs
The user, that wants to start the virtual machine is member of group "sambausers". Then I try to start the machine:

Code: Select all

horst@computer:~/.config/VirtualBox$ vboxmanage startvm Testmachine
Waiting for VM "Testmachine" to power on...
VM "Testmachine" has been successfully started.
horst@computer:~/.config/VirtualBox$
Anyway, this is the result:

Code: Select all

horst@computer:~/.config/VirtualBox$ ps ax | grep estmachine
10761 pts/0 S+ 0:00 grep --color=auto estmachine
Then I check the output inside the corresponding logfile:

Code: Select all

horst@computer:~/.config/VirtualBox$ cat VBoxSVC.log

I've tried many different things, but nothing helped to far:

* I tried to exchange the version of virtualbox,
* I tried to uninstall all meta-files installed by additional ubuntu-packages and replaced them with files from the virtualboxguestadditions iso-image.
* I must have tried tons of other things, that i don't even remember right now as i've tried for such a long time...

The very identical machine runs fine on my Windows-Host, but not on the Linux-Host as described above. I am running Ubuntu 14.04.3 "trusty" LTS. This kernel is installed:

Code: Select all

horst@computer:~/.config/VirtualBox$ uname -a
Linux computer 3.19.0-25-generic #26~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 24 21:16:20 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
The processor should be capable of running virtual machines:

Code: Select all

Post the guests log file ( as an attachment ). Right click on the guest in the Main Manager then click show log. Save and post as an attachment. Compress if it is too large to post.

As well as the following information from the host terminal:

id
and the same for the user that is trying to log on.

Hello Perryg!

I am sorry, but there is no logfile, at least there seems to be none. If I check in the "Logs"-directory, where the .vbox, .vbox-prev and .vdi - files are kept, the Logs are not written. The date of last change is some weeks ago and they don't get updated if I start the virtual machine.

And regarding your hint, where to click on once i use virtualbox does not help out as I am starting on a headless machine just with ssh-access and no X-server.

Anyway, here's the output of "id" with the user, that wants to start the machine:

Code: Select all

horst@computer:~$ id
uid=1001(horst) gid=1001(horst) Gruppen=1001(horst),1006(svn),1007(gl),1008(sambausers)
Thanks again in advance,
Herakles

Users other than the owner ( one that installed VirtualBox ) do not get permission to use it. Meaning you would need to have VirtualBox home in a neutral location that is accessible to everyone and those users would need to be in the vboxusers group.
