Is upgrading Windows 7 and 8 to w10 on VB at all possible
Hello,
I've been unsuccessfully attempting to upgrade windows 7 and 8.1 to Windows 10 on VB for months. Beside the notorious Windows 8 VirtualBox error (VirtualBox Graphics Adapter for Windows 8 The display manufacturer hasn't made your display compatible with Windows 10), on Windows 7, one needs to have SP1 (Service Pack 1) installed. You can not be sure that either of the two Windows 7 or 8 legitimate and genuine Microsoft OSes will actually be able to install the required Windows updates, never mind the windows upgrade itself.
It is unbelievable, how many hidden dependencies may pop up once you start installing SP1 on w7. The most ridiculous is the fact that even VirtualBox's VM have to be tweaked with, namely, the "VB Guest Additions" should be uninstalled, in order to clear many of the the update, upgrade and installation obstacles. I could not find adequate info about how to uninstall GA for Windows guests.
Can please someone direct me to info about uninstalling Windows 7, and Windows 8 GA.
Also, can you tell us if anyone ever succeeded to upgrade (not install from scratch via a purchased Microsoft's CD) either Windows 7 or 8 on VirtualBHox?
Please do not send us to the pages explaining how to create private installation media for OEM installed Windows, (all these skims fail to work on VirtualBox because of the above mentioned and far from properly explained dependencies and preconditions).

You remove the GAs in Windows from Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs… look for Oracle in the list.

No, even after removing GA the same problems persist. On Windows 7 the "Get Windows 10 icon", is missing after gazilion updates to get the SP1 installed, not even after downloading KB976932-x86.exe manually. There has been a lot said about this here on this forums, however most of it is hot air.
Is there a chance this will get fixed in reasonable time, or will the one year free upgrade expire on us, before we could ever use it on VirtualBox, because, Microsoft does not have a proper info from Oracle about unique device ID
. The two companies should work out an agreement about the protocol, to allow ephemeral machines to be uniquely identified in virtualization enviromments.

FWIW, there are most likely hundreds if not thousands of users who have installed Windows 7, 8 and 10 as guests in VirtualBox on OSX, Linux and Windows hosts.

Like I said, jr, thx. It seems, you've exhausted your magic powers of wisdom or luck here, and that nobody did the upgrade successfully, but if they did, please share with us the tricks of the trade.

There must be 50 or more posts on how to upgrade to Windows 10 on here. I'd rather not type the 51st.
but here is Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 running as guests. The Windows 10 guest was upgraded from Windows 8.1

Can you kindly list all the mentioned 50 posts here and, I will tell you exactly what each one is missing or intentionally obscuring, so people could see how to avoid wasting time, and money on prizing things like this missing and/or misleading and even fraudulent info, you are, perhaps ignorantly and really in good faith, serving us.loukingjr wrote:There must be 50 or more posts on how to upgrade to Windows 10 on here. I will try once more…

from The Forum Posting Guide… viewtopic.php?f=24&t=8208
Search the forums before posting. This is particularly important at the moment because we are struggling to cope with the posting demand. Most of the questions posted are directly answered by one of the first dozen or so hits if you search using the tricks discussed below. Also remember that we maintain a Forum FAQ for those oft repeated questions.

I am a member of Open Systems since its inception, and certainly, do not need to be reminded, that we work free for common good. As for your 50 incomplete and inadequate posts, please list them, so we can make a true contribution to the manual, which is waiting, to be too late for those of us who wish to do the upgrades!
