VirtualBox 5.0 full screen problem with composite manager

Post by coriolan »

Hi!

Just upgraded to VirtualBox 5.0 (host: Ubuntu 14.04 amd64, guest: Windows).
Relevant extension pack and guest additions installed.

PROBLEM:
When switching to full screen, the VM screen resizes all right to fill the screen, but the screen is
dimmed (brightess is reduced), almost the same effect as when you pause the VM, but not quite.

INVESTIGATION:
I narrowed down the problem to compton, a compositor for X11.
When compton is killed, the fullscreen mode works fine.

Previously, with VirtualBox 4.3.30 (and many versions before that), fullscreen mode used to work
correctly with compton.

Any suggestions how to make compton and VB play along?

Many thanks.

Update: An easy workaround if to add and exception for VirtualBox windows in the ".compton.conf" file (in your Linux Home directory)

In the "shadow-exclude -" section of the file I simply added:

"n:w:*VirtualBox*",

That appears to resolve the problem.

Cheers,

Mike.

Hi All, I've got the same problem today on Fedora 24 / Gnome, that I believe doesn't use compton. Any advice?

I had the same problem on gnome flashback. My workaround:

- open dconf editor
- search for "idle-brightness"
- change value to 100 (default is 30)
- quit session
- login again

May be disabling the checkbox "idle-dim" just below "idle-brightness" does the job too.

Same problem here.

HOST: Ubuntu 16.04 x64, fully updated
GUEST: Windows XP Pro SP3, with latest Guest Additions installed
VirtualBox: 5.2.14 PUEL

I've tried the dconf sollution, but didn't worked for me.

The low brightness effect only happens in fullscreen mode

In normal mode, the brightness is ok

And, when I put in fullscreen mode, an area of screen (where the menubar slides) keeps the normal brightness.

This happened after an Ubuntu update this week. But I've tried to use old kernels, and problem still.

Ubuntu was updated today and the problem was fixed.

Unfortunately, I don't have any clue about this.

Let me try to decipher the Gordian Knot...
it was an Ubuntu/compton issue... :D
