share folder host to guest w/o VBoxGuestAdditions

Postby Derek Winterstien » 1. May 2015, 05:17

The host is Kubuntu the guest is CentOS. The guest is console only, no xorg. VBoxGuestAdditions requires xorg making it not an option.

How can I share a folder on the host to the guest without VirtualBox guest additions?

I would like to mount a folder from the host on the guest file system.

VBoxGuestAdditions does NOT require xorg. You can share folders with VirtualBox in headless mode.

How do you install the guest additions in CentOS without xorg?

To answer the OPs question :-

You can create a normal SAMBA network share, provided host and guest are present on a single network (e.g. bridged or host-only).

You install the guest additions the same with or without xorg. From the terminal you run the install file with the --nox11 flag at the end of the command. It will complain about the missing xorg (because you don't have it) but will install the rest of the packages.

Below are the steps I follow for Guest additions in headless mode on Linux guest (on Linux host):

* Install DKMS on guest
* Install Guest Additions
** Mount Guest Addition CD
** Run sh ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
* Validate Guest additions install

Use this script to do the install (or upgrade) of guest additions.
