I have to admit it never occurred to me to copy something to the host's clipboard before I started a guest.

Nor me. However, whether it's a bug a not it is useful to have this possible scenario identified, so thanks to hmickler for that.

I've now been using same kit as described above, CentOS, KDE, VirtualBox and windoze guests for 1 week, without any klipper.
Bidirectional clipboard has been working good too.
So I'm concluding that klipper does not play well with VirtualBox. Not sure which is at fault, and don't really care.
I can work happily without the klipper.

BTW, I previously experienced clipboard failure (when klipper active) regardless of whether VM guest was started before or after trying to use clipboard.

Edit. In case anybody else discovers this thread, I believe the correct way to disable klipper is documented at

Any of you tried to turn on “Enable clipboard actions” in Klipper? (I'm running Klipper 0.9.7 on KDE 4.14.3 on a Fedora 21 machine at the moment)

That seems to have fixed it for me, though it might just be a random happenstance...
